Creating Mask out of Diffuse

Hey guys,

iam doing a tut on ue4 and the guy is using a mask texture to set up some color values with a multiply and a lerp. the results are looking good and now i want to know how to get out of this diffuse:

I think he made it in photoshop but iam not sure. I tryed to do some Black/White and Hue & Saturation stuff but i dont get these good black and white effect he does with the mask from 2.

Hope you can tell me how to create a mask like this

Probably photoshop, I created a layer, used the shadows/highlight option, fiddled with it a bit, then added a cloud layer (black white) on soft light filter, then a very high contrast one, blurred it, again a soft light filter, merged all the layers, played around with some curved, duplicated with pin light filter and i came close.
the guy probably did it with more attention and love and got a better result. but its highly possible to make a mask just like it.
