I’m not even sure how to ask this question because I don’t know all the terminology I need, but here is my best shot.
I’ve places the Racetrack stands onto my map and it shows a hierarchy of “parts” walls floors props etc. under a file label called “Racetrack Stands” If I click on any of the parts I can move them independently. Or I can move the entire thing by selecting the top level label “Racetrack Stands” and move the entire thing. But what I can’t do is copy and paste it.
I’ve edited the model(?) took out a bunch of the parts I don’t want, and now I want to copy and past the new model(?) a few times. How do I do that without having to select every part separately in the model to copy/paste?
is there a way for me to make the new Model something that I can Move/copy/Paste all as one unit?
As long as you didn’t delete the “parent” part, (what you described as the top level label) but only deleted the “children” parts, (the individual pieces) you should be able to reselect the parent part and move/copy what’s left of the prefab.
You can even add parts to a parent category too, if you want. To do that, select the piece(s), right-click them in the content browser, and click “attach.” It will then display all available actors; type in the search bar whatever parent you want to attach it to, and click on it.
That should add the original piece to the parent you selected.
If it were me, I would select the parent in the list, it should highlight on the stage/play area. Then holding the alt key and the gizmo in the “move” gizmo state, I would drag off of that gizmo to make a new instance of that parent and it’s children. I believe that should work.
Yeah, Alt move, for what ever reason, only copies the parent, and not the children. I can move, rotate, and scale. everything but copy/paste isn’t working for some reason. Seems like it should be.
Sorry for my mixed-up terminology. The outliner was what I was talking about. Did you try selecting both the parent part and the children parts, then duplicating?
If I use the “attach to” option, it attaches the objects and I can move the parent in the scene and the children will move to, but copy/paste and alt-move on the gizmo does not duplicate.
If I take my children objects and drag drop them on to the parent object in the outliner then that also allows me to move them but not duplicate.
The only way to duplicate more than one object at a time is to select them all in the outliner (doing the above step of parenting in the outliner not the attach method) and then alt-drag the move gizmo and it duplicates all of them.
So, if you have 30 objects attached to a parent object an easy way to select them all would be to select the parent object in the outliner. Hold the SHIFT key down and select the last child item. It will then select all the items in between them.
If you ever need to add other objects you can hold the CTRL key down and click on other objects in the outliner one at a time and they don’t need to be next to the other selected items.
If you CTRL click on an item that is already selected in the outliner it will deselect it.
Just remember in the outliner, SHFT will select ranges of items and CTRL will select individual items.
Hi Dale,
This is what I do, I create a “New File” call it what you like, then click the “Top level title” of the prefab - Right-Click and scroll down to the “Move To” option…,
Move everything to the FOLDER you created, then you will be able to click on your “Folder Name” right click and “Select All Descendants”…,
It will then act as any group of Assets to duplicate (Alt+Drag) Move etc.
If you do duplicate, as you drag all the duplicate assets will be selected, use that opportunity to move the duplicate to another folder (Right Click - on the highlighted assets + Move To) that you create, then you’ll have the ability to select each one separately.
