Crash on Path Traced render The paging file is too small for this operation to complete

Using Virtual Textures with a large project (think City Sample). I am constantly crashing with longer (100+) 4k Path Traced frame renders and getting the following error
“The paging file is too small for this operation to complete.”
Is this a Windows 10 specific thing? How can I fix?

I think you are hitting a bottleneck during this process, related to virtual memory. Considering Path Tracer is quite taxing in almost any system, any shortage of GPU or RAM will destroy your process.

So, I would suggest manually adjusting your virtual memory. Simply go to to Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory. There, uncheck “Automatically manage paging file size”. Pick your best drive, select “Custom Size” and try the following values:

  • Initial Size: 65536 (64 GB)
  • Maximum Size: 131072 (128 GB)

Apply the changes, and restart your system. After that, test rendering a smaller batch, around 30 frames, and make sure no other application is running in the background. If no crashes occur, you can test with +100 frames, or stick to small batches to reach the end result.
