Crash on launch on Android after upgrading from UE 5.6 to UE 5.7

Hello!

We recently started looking into finally upgrading our mobile project from 5.6 to 5.7.

When trying to launch a build packaged with 5.7.3 (and 5.7.2) on any of our Android testing devices our game immediately crashes.

We’ve spent a fair bit of time trying to narrow down what the issue might be and so far we’ve found that the crash only happens with the deferred mobile renderer enabled. If we switch to the forward renderer (setting r.Mobile.ShadingPath=0 in Config/DefaultEngine.ini) the crash goes away. We would ideally like to keep using the deferred renderer though.

Some other findings and things we’ve tried:

  • Not reproducable in a minimal test project
  • Vulkan-only still has the issue
  • Forcing cook of /Engine/EngineMaterials does not help
  • Creating & cooking a map with a Light Function material does not help
  • As far as I can tell shader dumps do not contain FMobileDirectionalLightFunctionPS

Any ideas what this might be about? Anyone else that’s run in to this?
