Course: Designing Photoreal Environments for Cinematics

In this course from Epic Online Learning, we cover the full range of techniques you need to create large scale cityscapes. Kitbash together existing high-quality assets to create a coherent theme. Learn how to use the Foliage Tool to build up your environment and create a Master Material for more versatility in lighting and color schemes. Populate a city with static signs and animated objects, then composite live-action videos into the scene using the Unreal Engine’s Media Player pipeline.

Following along and creating the scene. I’m up to building the window material. Is it possible to get the building lights texture that was used added to the tutorial project files?

Hi, why is the quality of the video so low even on 1080p? It’s tough to see text and sometimes video bitrate drops so much, that you can barely see what is shown.

Hello! I am the author of the course. The rest of the content needed to follow along is in the project files section.
If you click on the Neo City Mini Kit link, you will see a Source Files folder. I would download all of it, go through the Read Me file as it explains what each folder contains.

Happy learning!

Hmm, probably something on the epic side or something to do with bandwidth. I opened the videos and fullscreen-ed them in a 1080p monitor and it looked clear. But yeah if I scrub fast to another section, it does take a couple of seconds to buffer in and during that time it looks low res but resolves quickly back up to 1080p clarity.

for some reason i cant download neo city. i get directed to cargo but once there i dont see neo city??

Hello everyone! If you need more info or get stuck with the course, I made a guide and detail info video which helps your course experience go smoothly.

Hello! This was recorded before cargo war launched. You can download the Neo City kit from the project files link on the course page. Check out the video I linked above. It will show you the way and has more tips in it.

ok thanks now i understand. I was having lots of issues trying to download from cargo. It simply didn’t work. Your explanation makes things clearer. I really like what you’ve done.
I have started studying for a masters in game design at a university in Sweden. I’m just a beginner but i have an idea for a game. the idea and concept behind the game itself is pretty solid i just need to become proficient with certain tools. anyway thankyou for your quick reply and may 2024 bring you peace and prosperity.

Hi again I’m sorry to keep messaging you about this. I’m going through your course and am enjoying it but am still stuck at the very beginning stage. I have downloaded the project link files and unzipped them but when i try to import them into an unreal project they don’t import. I have tried to drag and drop them into the content browser but this doesn’t seem to work either? Kind Regards Tom.

No worries man, happy to help!
Once you unzip the Neocity zip file from the Project Files section on the course page, you will see a uproject file in there.
Then you can follow along with “Asset Preparation” module on the course page starting at around 2 min 8 sec point in the video. It should guide you step by step from there onwards. If you get stuck on a specific step, lemme know and I can help you out.

If you want to share screen or chat with me in real time, I have a dedicated art and 3d Discord server where I am always available:

Your course is amazing, thank you for teaching this to us! There is one part that is not letting me move on though and that is the part where I need to cut out the street signs in another software. I’m trying to use blender for this but ive never used blender before and its a huge headache. Please help me with this as I really want to finish this course.

Hello! Thank you for your kind words!
You don’t have to cut it out yourself. I have provided this file, just for this exact reason to help out anyone who might not be familiar with a DCC application. Check out the project files section, there is a Cyberpunksigns.fbx file that you can import in UE and continue along with the course.
You can find more info in the video I linked above where I talk about important things to know before starting the course, highly recommend watching it as I breakdown all the files that come with the course.

Hi Indy! Lovely course, to say the least. Really learning a lot just following it. I’m stuck at getting the AnimatedTexture plugin to work. Unreal says I have to build it manually when I try to recompile after copying the folder. It’s not compiling like yours. Do you know why? And how I can fix it… Thanks

Thank you so much for going through the trouble! I did not realize you had done so. It’s not much but I have subscribed to you on Youtube to say thank you.

Hey! Are you trying to do the project in UE 5.3? If so, check out my video I posted above.

In the chapter “important things to know before starting” I talked about how to make the plugin work in 5.3.2. I tested it on my end and it works in there. Some other tips in there too for better course experience.

I appreciate the support! :heart::heart:

Yeah i am using 5.3.2, and I have the plugin working now! Thanks a lot!

We live in the year 2024 and the 1080p video cannot be viewed on a 4K monitor. Sorry but that’s not possible, it makes your eyes water

I apologize that I don’t have a 4K screen at home otherwise I would have recorded it in 4K.
