"Couldn't update file associations" and no projects in Library, so I can't use "Add to Project"

Summary

Hi all,

Since a recent launcher update, my projects no longer show up in the Epic Games Launcher (Library → My Projects). This means I can’t add my Vault/Fab library content to any project, because the “Add to Project” dialog has nothing to pick from.

Every time the launcher starts, it shows “Project files not associated: uproject files are not associated with this Launcher. Would you like to associate them now?” If I click Fix Now, I get “Error: Couldn’t update file associations.” (screenshot attached).

The association itself seems fine. Double-clicking a .uproject opens it in the right engine version without problems. The registry looks correct:

HKCR.uproject → Unreal.ProjectFile
HKCR\Unreal.ProjectFile\shell\open\command → “C:\Program Files\Epic Games\Launcher\Engine\Binaries\Win64\UnrealVersionSelector.exe” /editor “%1”
The same entries are in both HKCU and HKLM, and that exe exists.
So the launcher seems to think the association is broken when it isn’t, and it can’t “fix” it.

System:

Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (build 26200)
Epic Games Launcher 20.3.3-0+UE5, installed in C:\Program Files\Epic Games\Launcher (not Program Files (x86))
Unreal Engine 5.8.2 (launcher install, C:\Program Files\Epic Games\UE_5.8), plus older 5.5 and 5.7 configs
Projects are on a separate drive: D:\Unreal Engine Projects...
Documents is redirected to OneDrive (D:\OneDrive\Documents). The default Unreal Projects folder there exists but is empty.
I renamed my Windows user profile at some point (old C:\Users\primo → C:\Users\Primoz), in case that matters.

What I’ve tried:

Clicking “Fix Now” (fails with the error above)
Opening the projects directly through UE 5.8 so they appear in the editor’s recent projects list. They do appear in the editor’s Project Browser, but still not in the launcher.
Also tried running the launcher as admin and re-installing.

Questions:

Where does the launcher get its project list from now? Does it only scan Documents\Unreal Projects, and does a OneDrive-redirected Documents folder break that?

What exactly does “Fix Now” try to write that fails? Can I do it by hand, for example by running UnrealVersionSelector.exe /fileassociations as admin?
Is there a way to point “Add to Project” at a project path directly?
Thanks!
