Controlling DepthFade? Or alternatives?

So I’ve made a scalable material that depicts the range of my enemies and it looks all well and good. But I’d really love to have it fade out when it over laps the player or other enemy ships. I first looked into using a DepthFade, but I found it hard to get the results I wanted. Its not nearly as big or as controlled as I would like and it doesn’t show at all in a top down orthographic view (which my game is). I haven’t been able to find much explanation on how to better manipulate the depthFade, can someone point me in the right direction? Or, is there some better alternative that might work better? I was contemplating looking into this technique shown in this video ( ) but that seems like it only works well for inputing one location vector and ideally I need my material to do properly fade out for many actors.
