[CONTRACT] Unreal Technical Animator / Ascent Combat Specialist — Damned of Rome

Hi everyone, I’m Chris. I’m developing Damned of Rome, a cinematic, story-driven Roman gladiator game in Unreal Engine.

I’m looking for an experienced Unreal technical animator or melee-combat developer for a small paid assignment, with the possibility of additional work if we’re a good fit.

We have a playable arena prototype using Ascent Combat Framework, assembled characters, environments, and purchased animation assets. The focus is on small, grounded encounters where weapon contact, defensive reactions, and deaths feel convincing.

INITIAL ASSIGNMENT

Review and polish one sword-and-shield encounter between our protagonist and a Roman opponent:

• Improve visible weapon contact and animation transitions.
• Polish one short paired execution using suitable existing assets.
• Correct attacker/victim alignment, clipping, and recovery.
• Ensure the execution behaves safely around nearby enemies and obstacles.
• Make the killing blow and resulting death clearly readable during gameplay.

Some of this functionality is already implemented, but it needs expert review and refinement. We want to preserve the existing Ascent framework and its core combat rather than replace it.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

• Unreal animation Blueprints, montages, retargeting, and root motion.
• Melee combat, paired animations, or execution systems.
• Ascent Combat Framework experience is strongly preferred.
• Blender or Maya experience for animation corrections is a plus.

SCOPE AND PAYMENT

This is paid contract work. Please provide your hourly rate and, after reviewing the footage and task brief, a fixed-price estimate for the initial milestone.

Scope, deliverables, and payment will be agreed before work begins. The initial milestone should include editable project assets, a playable demonstration, and brief handoff notes. No unpaid test work is expected.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This is an early independent prototype with an AI-assisted workflow. I’m looking for hands-on human expertise and candid feedback about what needs fixing. Our current priority is a focused arena vertical slice.

Remote collaboration is welcome.

Please send me a forum message with:

• Relevant in-engine examples.
• What you personally implemented in those examples.
• Your Unreal and Ascent experience.
• Your availability and rates.

I can share current gameplay footage and a detailed brief privately. Thanks!

Hello. You can check out examples of my work here.

Several of them were almost 100% implemented by me. In most cases I had to edit things, including VFX. Except for this video, where I personally did about 50%. I mostly lead a small team for that project. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYrdi1-aaOk I trained a junior programmer to assist with that project.

I don’t have much ascent experience, but it doesn’t take me long to figure things out with the experience I have, plus I now use AI to assist with several things. I worked for several years without AI and that gave me the experience needed to be effective with AI. I believe Ascent is a blueprint focused plugin and I would advice against that tbh. If you are using a plugin you want C++ plugins like Narration Pro which also has a combat framework similar to ascent. Given what you said, I highly advise you get Narration Pro. It was made for story rpg games and comes with a combat framework that uses a lot of what Epic themselves use.

I currently have open availability. My timezone atm is UTC+8, but I can be flexible with meeting times. My rates would depend on a number of things. I usually charge 3-4k a month for full-time, but we can do milestone or part-time. It just depends. I am capable of doing most things on the technical or programming side.

You can contact me at als90@yahoo.com or on discord brazen.aiden and we can discuss this more in a call before you make a discussion.

Edit: Oh ok. Looks like it does use C++ and GAS, which good. GAS is a plugin made by epic, if it is using gas then it will be much easier for me to recognize what they are doing.

Hi Chris! I have strong hands on experience with Unreal Engine animation blueprints, blendspaces and weapon equipment state blending as shown in my portfolio. I would love to help polish the sword and shield encounters and execution alignment for Damned of Rome. Since you are using the Ascent Combat Framework are you currently facing any specific clipping issues during the paired execution transitions?

Hi Chris,

I came across your post about Damned of Rome and the sword-and-shield combat polish requirement.

I’m Hari from Apple Arts Studios (AAS), India. We have 15+ years of experience in motion capture and animation production, including gameplay/combat animation, mocap cleanup, retargeting, animation polish and Unreal Engine workflows.

The initial milestone you described — improving weapon contact and transitions, paired execution polish, attacker/victim alignment, clipping, recovery and making the final hit/death read convincingly — is the type of animation refinement our team can support.

We’d be interested in reviewing the current gameplay footage and detailed brief and then providing a fixed-price estimate for the initial paid milestone, as requested.

We can work within your existing Ascent Combat Framework setup rather than replacing the current system. I’d also like to be transparent that I would first confirm the exact Ascent-specific implementation requirements with our technical animation team after reviewing your project brief.

If you’re open to working with a studio rather than an individual contractor, please share the gameplay footage and brief and we can review the scope with our animation team.

Hi

If this is still on, I’m a generalist and would like to work on your project. I’ve done all the things you can do in game as I’m usually making them alone or in small teams.

freelanced on those:
made the prototype and then most of the match part and some menus

here I was hired for enemy AI and then stayed for the rest of the project fixing stuff

Aerobots VR, multiplayer shooter, I worked on the AI with 3d navigation and multiplayer fixes but it was abandoned for some reason

personal:

my Ascent experience is: never heard of it but that’s the case with most of stuff I’ve worked on so far. rate is $50/h

Hi Chris,

This sounds like an exciting project since one of my favourite movies of all time is Gladiator. I would be psyched to collaborate with you on it. I mainly do sound design, from creating assets to building the systems and implementing them. Please keep us in mind if you need audio. we think we could be a great fit!

Hi Chris! I’m interested in the Unreal Technical Animator role for Damned of Rome. I’m a 3D artist animator and I can help with animation polishing character alignment, transitions rigging and combat animations. I can share my relevant Unreal/3D animation work for you to check. Do you have any specific references or requirements for the initial sword-and-shield encounter?
