No, I did not import a blank white square multiple times. Is there any way to get the content browser to show transparency properly, so that these white-on-clear icons can be distinguished by sight?

2024, UE 5.3 and I’m still having this problem. Anyone know how to solve it? I’d like to be able to see the difference between 200 images that are all white except for the transparency, but everything is white…
For anyone that is still having this issue! You can set the ‘Texture Group’ of your texture to ‘UI’. This will correctly show the transparency in the content browser.
If you’re in control of the export, check if your program lets you pick what RGB values get stored in transparent pixels.
For example, in Inkscape you can set the document’s background color. Setting it to black and exporting a PNG with a transparent background will make it show up like this in the content browser:
