Clarification on the direction of Landscape vs Mesh Terrain

Hello Epic team,

Quick question regarding terrain workflows: is Mesh Terrain intended to replace Landscape, or to work alongside it?

Any clarification on how Epic sees the future of both systems would really help with early technical decisions.

Thank you for you time!

Hi,

Mesh Terrain is under active development and is indeed seen as the next iteration of landscape-type workflows. However, landscape is and will be under active development (mostly in support mode) for the foreseeable future still, since it’s at the center of so many other systems (landscape grass, physical materials, PCG, HLOD, water, etc.) and is fundamental to virtually every existing project out there. The Mesh Terrain team is currently hard at work trying to close the gap with landscape but there is quite a bit of work before it can be considered production-ready and on-par. In terms of workflows, in particular, because it has always been a goal of Mesh Terrain from its inception : in terms of workflow and capabilities, Mesh Terrain should at the very least represent a superset of landscape, albeit in a more generic way.

You can therefore consider that both systems will continue to co-exist for a certain time (and quite possibly forever).

I hope that clears things up a bit.

Cheers,

Thank you very much for the clear and quick response!
