Cast no shadows but receive them

I’ve made some speedtree grass using crosshatched planes that look good with no lighting. But with lighting built the shadows are dark and deep and look unnatural. I’d be happy to have the grass just receive shadows but not cast them. But when I deselect cast shadows the light build takes away the shadows cast by other objects on the grass too.

Is there a way to cast no shadows yet receive them or have an object not included in the light build.

I deleted the grass. Closed the project. Opened it again and then re-applied the grass and this time the shader rebuilt and the grass received the shadow but didn’t cast any. Reading through the forums it looks like this is a re-occuring problem with grass going dark after lightbuild.
