Can't use custom gun models with the new custom weapons feature

Summary

As shown in the documentation for the new custom weapons feature, you should be able to delete the base gun template mesh and add your own custom mesh. However you can only add back a base gun template mesh or a default shape mesh. For both of these, the area where you’d naturally swap meshes in the details panel is all grayed out and unclickable. I’ve seen youtubers that are using custom meshes so they haven’t had any issues. What is going on here exactly? is it something i’ve done or is it a bugged new feature?

Steps to Reproduce

right click empty space in your islands folder in the content browser > entity prefab > assault rifle template > double click new prefab > click the rifle mesh > click the mesh component in the details panel > delete > select the root in the outliner > + component > mesh component > FAIL - I can only select another weapon template or a shape - all of which i cant swap the textures so id need to delete the mesh again and the circle goes on.

Expected Result

You should be able to add a custom weapon mesh at the point of failure above. or you should be able to swap the weapon mesh with a custom mesh when the weapon mesh is selected - just like how you can easily swap textures on a floor or wall.

Observed Result

I add a new component and i cant swap textures - its all grayed out.

Additional Notes

You should be able to swap meshes easily. Unless i’m missing something, or there is a bug, the newly released feature doesn’t work - you are stuck with the 4 weapon templates.

I think this points to a much larger problem with Scene Graphs and custom gameplay creation in general.

Even if this isn’t a bug and is working exactly as intended, the current implementation feels incredibly restrictive. Scene Graphs were introduced as a way to create custom gameplay systems, including custom weapons, but then the Mesh Component only lets us choose from a few primitive shapes and a handful of Fortnite gun meshes.

Not everyone wants to make another gun game.

A lot of creators want to build melee combat systems, fantasy RPGs, dungeon crawlers, action-adventure games, sci-fi experiences, or entirely new genres. If I want to create a sword, axe, hammer, spear, magic staff, lightsaber-style weapon, or some completely original item, why can’t I simply assign my own mesh to the component?

Right now, the only readily available options are Fortnite’s gun meshes and basic geometric shapes. The existing Fortnite melee weapons are extremely limited and often don’t fit the style or gameplay creators are trying to build. Custom gameplay shouldn’t be forced to look like Fortnite Battle Royale with slightly different mechanics.

This is one of the reasons so many Creative maps end up feeling the same. Even when creators build unique gameplay systems, they’re often stuck presenting them with the same small collection of Fortnite assets because the visual customization options are so restricted.

The programming side of Scene Graphs is moving toward giving creators more freedom, but the visual side feels like it’s still locked behind unnecessary limitations. If custom weapons are supposed to be a flagship feature, assigning custom meshes should be one of the most basic capabilities available.

Whether this is a bug or intended behavior, I hope Epic addresses it. Scene Graphs have the potential to let creators build experiences that don’t feel like Fortnite, but that’s hard to achieve when the mesh options are essentially “pick a cube” or “pick one of Fortnite’s guns.”

Theres alot of great maps out there but, like you say, they do all feel like fortnite still. I hope that Epic can lift some of these limitations and give us more visual freedom soon.
