Additional Notes

First image shows the dropdown working in 5.6.1.
Second image shows that there is no dropdown in 5.7.2. It automatically tries to create a Non-Weight Blended Layer. There is no caret to indicate a dropdown.

As an update to this, 5.7.2 is also missing the ability to change the Target Layer sort type and to hide unused layers. Why are features being removed with new engine updates?

Weight-blended layers have not been removed. The option is simply not exposed from the landscape editor at creation-time but can be changed within the layer info asset at an time by changing the “Weight Blending Method” parameter. The change has been made in order to streamline the editor mode UX and make the workflow more similar to other generic assets. There has been a problem with the release notes in 5.7 unfortunately and the change describing these modifications has been omitted and the documentation team is still in the process of documenting the new options.
You can also define which type of weight blending will be chosen by default for your project when creating a new layer info asset. Go to the projects settings, in Engine - Landscape, you can set the “Target Layer Default Blend Method” to the value you prefer.

This has not been removed, simply moved one row down, next to the Filter Target Layers, since it was a better location, UX-wise, since these are essentially display options, rather than layer management options, where they were before.
Unlike the blend method options, this was properly indicated in the landscape release notes :

  • UX improvements:

    • Updated icons to landscape target layers display order methods.

    • Added sort type (ascending/descending) for this.

    • The sort/filter options have moved next to filter box within the Layers property (since they affect only the layers that are visible, these buttons should not be present when the property is collapsed).

    • Added a number of target layers in the Layers property header, in order to be similar to standard arrays and also the edit layers property above.
