Can't Build in My 1v1 Buildfight Map – Build Mode is Active

Summary

Hey everyone,
I’m having an issue with my 1v1 buildfight map in UEFN. I’ve set everything up, published the map, and made sure Build Mode is set to Active, but when I test it (in the live version), I can’t place any builds.

I’ve double-checked the settings and devices, and I don’t see anything wrong. It’s a basic setup with a symmetrical layout, and I haven’t restricted building through any volumes or rules (at least not intentionally).

Has anyone run into this before? Is there something I might be overlooking — like a volume setting, game rule, or device that could be blocking building?

Any help is appreciated!

Island Settings

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open UEFN and create a new 1v1 buildfight map.

  2. Set up the map with a small, symmetrical layout.

  3. Ensure Build Mode is set to Active in the island settings.

  4. Add player spawns and test the map using “Start Session” or by launching the published version.

  5. Attempt to place builds (walls, ramps, etc.) during gameplay.

Expected Result

Players should be able to freely place builds (walls, floors, ramps, cones) anywhere within the designated play area during the match. Building should function normally, allowing for standard 1v1 buildfight gameplay.

Observed Result

Players are unable to place any builds during the match. Attempting to build results in nothing happening, as if building is completely disabled, despite Build Mode being set to Active.

I’m sorry to hear you are experiencing this issue. @Cyanidefn

If possible can you check in island settings what you have set for:

Infinite Resources or Maximum Build Resources?

Thanks for responding. @DRAGONSTUDIO

Infinite Resources= enabled
Maximum Build Resources= 0 (I tried other values but it did not solve the issue)

Mutators can enable/disable building
depending on how you island was built you have to ensure the floor piece your wanting to place a build on is adhering to the build grid
Think of the space as a 1x1x1 square grid of thousands of squares. If the floor piece doesnt align with this grid then the build cannot anchor to the grid and itll show the build piece on the screen but itll no doubt be red. There are methods to help changing this if thats the case - I would advice placing a grid plane it should be in the fortnite folder as this by default allows building in any height location i believe and test if you can build on it within the same island thatll confirm if its the build grid issue. Please test and report back

Thank you for the response and reporting back with the settings.
If you have mutator zones on the map- take a read of @AtAshTag advice as that might be the case! I agree with him that you have to ensure your map is built on grid.

If you do not have mutators and you are certain it is build on grid – then the only thing I can think of that might possibly be still happening is that you have a team settings and inventory device and/or class designer device - to where maximum build resources and/or infinite resources are not set – or set to don’t override

Keep in mind of the hierarchy when using island settings plus team settings and inventory and/or class designer which is

There is a hierarchy of setting overrides, described as follows:

  • Island Settings are the baseline.
  • Team Settings & Inventory overrides Island Settings if there is a specific value set in the device.
  • Class Designer overrides both Team Settings & Inventory and Island Settings, if there is a specific value set in the device that differs from the Island Settings or Team Settings & Inventory values.
