Can you limit how many layers of translucency are rendered?

For example: if you have 2 flat planes with a translucent material and you look through one at the second, can you render the second one invisible? Is there a setting someplace that can limit the depth to which transparency is rendered?

Edit - actually this doesn’t really do what I was originally asking about but it does help with more general z-sorting issues.
