Can we please re open the discussion for optimizing path tracer for macOS? Also is there any changes toward development? Has it been discussed as a possibility within the company?
I'm also interested in using path tracer on my iMac? Are there any new releases (updates, add ons,...) to make "ray tracing" possible on an iMac? This would be great!
Hello ,
Thank you for posting in the community and your interest with Path Tracer for macOS, unfortunately this is not currently possible due to limitations as those apple devices are not able to run Ray tracing. As soon as we are able to deliver comparable Path Tracer tools for mac we will be making them available for Twinmotion.
Kind regards,
Vincent B.
Hello
Sorry to reopen this subject , but since my decision on moving to Apple silicon is hanging on this point I am trying to collect as much accurate information as possible before making the leap.
Based on the "Path tracing requirements" page Link Here . Dated Nov. 2021
It is mentioned that the path tracing functionality is based off Unreal Engine's ray tracing capabilities. I was curious to know if there is any up to date information or if there are any changes in this matter since in a demonstration video done by Adam Does CG youtube channel Video Link here: https://youtu.be/tPxWqTKq36Y
he demos UE5 raytracing project with a MACBook Pro with M1 Pro.
So does this mean base don UE5, twinmotion will be capable to run PT on apple silicon?
I have been doing a lot of digging and even tried to reach out to Apple but so far none i could reach had an answer.
Thank you in advance for your response and apologies for re-opening the subject.
Kind regards.
Rawad. S.
Hello ,
Thank you for the follow-up.
Our team is always looking at being able to adopt the new features from Unreal Engine but I am not certain about the timeframe and what will be able to work in Twinmotion for mac.
At this time you can however take your scene from Twinmotion 2023.1 into Unreal Engine using the content plugin found here so you can try some of those working features: https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/en-US/product/datasmith-twinmotion-content-for-unreal-engine
The best place to get more information for Unreal Engine for macOS is on the Epic Developer Community:

Here is another recent overview video for mac with UE 5.1:

If you are going to be using Path Tracer I recommend a Windows machine as it is more optimized for it.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Vincent B.
I got an M1 MAX MBP last year, and it couldn't use for Twinmotion Path Tracing.
So, I brought the RTX4070Ti this year for my PC, and it's fantastic for running Twinmotion. XDDD
Money and using Wintel PC + Nvidia GPUs is the easiest way to solve this issue.
But Apple really got a good design on their laptops. It is very efficient and powerful.
Every architect and designer hopes to take a nice MacBook everywhere to do their work.
Maybe one more year for Apple to release the new chips for raytracing, or someone could solve the DirectX12 issue and work on the Mac like Crossover is doing for Win games to Mac.
I think for using Pathtracer on Mac, Twimotion needs to build a new engine or maybe Plug-ins for it.
I'm watching intel dying because of Apple's new chips, but Nvidia still builds great GPUs for the 3D environment.
Apple also got great GPUs, but the 3D environment for the workflow is still fragile.
Apple GPUs do not only work well on Blender or C4D.
The GPU works exceptionally well on an "M1" iPad Pro (no fans) with the OctaneRender PT.

Also, Keyshot is doing a great job working on Apple silicon.
Will it be easier to bring UE5 lumen to the Mac and use Vulkan(? or Metal API(? to work?
I'm not sure about the tech things.
People still didn't buy the new Mac, is because some apps on Windows can't work on the Mac.
And everyone is still waiting.
We really hate the Wintel laptops with significant fan noise and ugly gaming designs for kids.
And the best GPUs are always with a gaming design. = =
For the long term, if more people are using Apple Mac, Bringing the path tracing to Twinmotion for Mac must be worthwhile.
