Can anyone tell me what good values are for this and any links that can explain it ?

That particular option is for the Lightmap Density viewmode (Lit> Lightmap Density). You can let it know what you consider to be too dense or too sparse for lightmap resolution (measured in texels, I believe) and it will adjust its colors accordingly. This has nothing to do with actual density of anything or any quality settings.

What are teh default settings for it?

My editor has:
Ideal Density .2
Maximum Density .8
Color Scale 1.0
Greyscale scale 1.0
