Budget Modeling Tools

Recently I picked up UE4 and started messing around with it (I am currently procrastinating the last little bit of the intro to level design tutorial because I would rather be kicked in the face than code and blueprint sounds a lot like coding). However I also am going to need some modeling tools so I can start putting things in UE4 that are not included with the engine.

Unfortunately I can’t afford may a even though that is the software I know best. Are there any good cheaper alternatives that aren’t too hard to use? I considered silo 2, but according to the steam forums support for that is dead. Modo steam edition looked promising until I saw the non-comercial and 7k polygon limit bits.

Ps: please don’t recommend blender. I tried it, and the interface makes maya’s look like a work of art, and maya’s interface is pretty dire.

:stuck_out_tongue: blender. Seriously, it’s the best cheapest modeling software around. When you are working with blender for a week the interface wont be a problem anymore.

If I have no other options I might try blender again. That being said, the last time I tried to use it things went poorly. Very poorly. I’m willing to spend up to $300 for something decent. Maybe more if necessary. I don’t need all the features in the world. I just need something that is user-friendly and plays well with UE4.

Then try Maya LT -> but you will have to pay monthly for it (30$)

When you have any problems with blender (when you start with it ^^) just post it into the forum and we will help you

Maya LT is currently what I am looking towards although the monthly cost does bother me a bit. What’s the consensus on lightwave these days? You can get the latest version for $225 on ebay: ://m.ebay/itm/231174074154?nav=SEARCH

Well, you can use Student edition of 3dsMax or Maya, while you are learning, but when the times come to sell you stuff you can purchase monthly version of software to release everything legally

If you have ~900$ it’s a good time to purchase Modo, it’s 40% off now. Software is a beast, interface is extremely good, as well as modeling pipeline. Too bad I’ve started my 3d journey with 3dsMax a long time ago :frowning:

I am very tempted by modo. I’ll download the free trial when I get home and if it really impresses me I might scrape together the funds somehow. If that doesn’t happen I’ll probably end up using some form of Maya LT or Lightwave if it turns out to be competitive.

Just get used to blender. The UI isn’t even bad you just often need to do a google to work out what they’ve called it, but most things are incorporated intelligently and there are some things I prefer with it compared to other things. For low-poly it’s amazing

Blender, Modo, Zbrush. I love them all. If could have only one it would Zbrush. Blender is free so you will have it regardless and it is great and gets better and better.

Blender is awesome and I find that it works brilliantly once you figure out the kinks, and there are a few especially where UE4 is concerned. As far as buying software on Ebay goes - I’d be very wary of super cheap deals on ‘new’ software. On more than a few occaisions I’ve paid for something like that and gotten a copied and cracked version (they did a decent job of reprinting the labels on the discs though).

Give blender another go. When you will learn the shortcuts and what does what, it will become a very powerful and also fun tool to use. When I get tired of learning blueprints(my main goal atm is to get good at BP), I put on some music and do some freestyle modeling on blender. Its alot of fun. Plus its free. You pay with your time that you spend learning the interface.

Lol the first time i opened blender the last couple weeks, i almost vomited.
the interface is straight garbage…gawd it was literally unbearable!

Just to let you know about Silo 2. I use Silo 2 on Steam and it’s very cheap and does everything you need for modelling. I would ignore what has been said on Steam the forums have moved to CG Society and Silo 2 is very much alive and doing well!

I would recommend buying Silo 2 now whilst its cheap, there is talks of a new company taking over and the company behind Silo 2 has hired a new programmer to update the software to make it more modern. Silo 2 is making a bit of a comeback, as to when though, I can’t say

 Everybody has his own preferences how a interface should look like -> but yeah, it is confusing when you open it for the first time, but after that… it’s amazing

Which 3D software is not confusing if you open it for the first time?
