"Best" way to import model from 3ds max?

Hi,

I’m not sure if this is the correct section of the forum for this topic.

I’m currently trying to import models to UE4 with materials on it. The problem i have is that materials not coming with the import (Importing from FBX). FBX seems to not have a good support for this and what i’ve read is that glTF 2.0 has this support. So i tried the plugin but without success (It crashes, see: https://forums.unrealengine.com/community/general-discussion/1431919-ue4-constantly-crashing-when-trying-to-play-game).

So my question is: What is the best way to import models with materials/textures ?

Regards.

You can only export the most basic material features, so you need to make sure you’re using only Standard materials with simple colors and only texture maps in any texture map slots.
Epic has a plugin for 3ds Max with Datasmith that can convert materials from renderers like Vray, but that’s a different workflow designed to convert whole archviz scenes using vray to UE4.

Hi,

Thanks for quick answer !

Ah… So, i can only import standard materials with simple colours/ textures, even using the glTF importer?
Thanks for the plugin info.

Regards.

The materials don’t correspond 1:1, so it needs something specially designed to translate the material between different programs, which is what Epic’s plugin does. For example, the standard material doesn’t have roughness/metallic, and Vray materials work differently as well and the conversion tool needs extra work to be able to work with them.

Thanks for this clarification !
