Best way to do triplanar projection on landscape master materials?

Truth, two reasons why I wouldn’t though:

  1. It’s paid for the good ones, when he does tutorials I can understand and do that some others may not be able to (hence, the “easy route”)
  2. I like learning! This is very fun to me, and assembling it on my own allows me to understand and tweak it better.

You gotta learn from somewhere and some of this stuff isn’t so intuitive. Pay or not, we all learn by either discovery or instruction; instruction is a fine-shortcut, don’t be shy of taking one once and a while → it’s what a book is.

You came here to ask a question, we answered, and I am telling you, for my experience, that guy is someone I learned from. Do with that as you will.

Very true, I wasn’t arguing I was just explaining the reason I wouldn’t use the paid method. I just prefer to do it myself. No harm done :blush:

No one cares but as always my 2c is:

Dont use landscapes.
And if you can avoid it dont use anything as complicated (cost wise) as triplanar or similar.

Performance is a concern, and this engine certainly isnt concerned one bit about it.
So you have to take up for its lack of care yourself.

And not using landscapes at all is probably the most obvious solution to achieving a decent gameplay FPS…

He does have some valid concerns vs static-meshes, eg: ‘freezing’ section of the landscape as a static-mesh, there is a plugin that helps: Landscape Mesh Builder - Free UE5 Tool

I still like plugging away, but I am also not a hardcore-dev, I noodle.

Nothing wrong with noodling - its good to prototype and explore new things.
Just maybe not with unreal now a days…

Yeah… UE can sap at your FPS. But it still can be done with proper optimization, otherwise Epic wouldn’t use it. I cannot pretend to be an expert or even extremely knowledgable on the subject, all I know is that it’s possible and I plan to try. UE has some really amazing features I plan to take full advantage of, and I am not about to let a few minor setbacks stop me :smile:

Still in the same tutorial, timestamp 18:43. In the X Nan Check and Y Nan Check Custom functions, the code would be:

Ok, I finished the tutorial (that was a lot of work…) And I think something is wrong. I may be incorrect, and I have no idea what it may be, but here is the material if someone (@Frenetic, @blyxzen?) Can help me out.

You will be able to see my whole graph. I hope it’s not too messy. It includes all the blends and auto material and whatnot, the Triplanar (Emaplanar supposedly) is only in the Material00 node.

Now, here are all the problems/things I need implemented:

  • Biggest problem: If you paint the Material00 next to another material with the same textures, it will look kinda washed out. The Normal map appears to be very weak.
  • If you paint it on a raised area with a smooth slope, the bottom of the slope will look very washed out, and the entire raised area looks more light then the same texture across the flat plane.

And things I’m not sure about:

  • With Triplanar on, it takes my scene from 120FPS in a blank scene to 70FPS with the following active:
    1. Landscape Paint mode
    2. Directional Light
    3. Exponential Height Fog
    4. Landscape
    5. Post Process Volume (global unbound GI Lumen)
    6. SKM_Manny_Simple (size reference)
    7. Sky Atmosphere
    8. Sky Light
    9. Volumetric Cloud

I’m dealing with some of my own project’s issues right now, but I’ll take a look when I can.

To address your performance, if by blank you mean a completely empty, black level, that is 100% normal and 99.99% Not Tri-Planar. Things like lighting, sky and landscapes (especially Lumen) are generally expensive. They’re usually some of the most expensive parts in every Unreal game.

For the project you’ve described wanting to do, and how ambitious it is performance-wise, features like Lumen really aren’t an option. You should try disabling it, see how many milliseconds you gain (and btw, you should use milliseconds to reference performance. Milliseconds are a constant unit of measurement, meaning a process will always take 2ms to perform, but that 2ms costs substantially more at 120fps (around 20fps) than 30fps (around 2fps)).

For your Tri-Planar performance, I’d try painting the entire landscape your layer, and swapping for Tri-Planar vs. traditional UVs in the material, and benchmark the difference. I think you’ll find that 1 instance of Tri-Planar (or Ena-Planar or whatever it’s called) projection isn’t going to swing your milliseconds by a noticeable amount.

EDIT: Also, tip: There’s a console at the bottom of your Unreal window (you can quickly access by pressing ~). If you type t.maxfps 500, it will essentially uncap your frame rate so you can get an accurate measurement of your FPS and milliseconds. Unreal imposes a default cap of 120fps, so if you see a constant reading of 120, it’s probably higher, but being capped by Unreal. Note– you’ll have to run this command every time you re-open Unreal.

SECOND EDIT: Play-In-Editor performance isn’t really reliable. You mentioned packaged builds and what it might look like in there. There’s really no way to predict that. If you want accurate results, you should probably benchmark in packaged builds.

Very helpful, that solves about 1/4 of my problems.
For t.MaxFPS, I recently discovered that and have been setting it to 60 just for performance reasons. I believe t.MaxFPS 0 sets it to unlimited, which for a blank scene for me is 140FPS (my refresh rate is 144GHz on my laptop and ~75GHz on a 24” 1080p monitor. And I also recently learned milliseconds are more accurate, I just haven’t spent any time running or learning the profiler yet or benchmarking things (as I said, just beginning—kinda taking giant leaps right now and coming back to things later). I’ll probably do that once I’m done with the rest of this section, but I just haven’t had time yet.

Yeah, so I got my own projects (and kids) but will look at what I can.

Couple things that jump out (and again I am not a pro-dev), but:

The VertexNormalWS is already a unit-length of 1, it doesn’t (shouldn’t?) need to be normalized so unsure why this is happening:

There might be some nifty-trick or reason why one might want to do so, but if such, it’s outside my personal-experience is all.. (I am often wrong though).

I also don’t use the landscape layer blending nodes. Once upon a time I was strongly advised against it had good performance results doing so, thus I never went back. I perform my own blending maths, as well as use Alex’s method for triplanar (temporal-noise) so what you are doing is significantly different from my approach… So we’re not apples to apples, but that’s only to say there is more than one way to do things.

That being said, you should be able to sort out all the projection/UV nonsense as well as any untiling with your UVs, all before you sample anything at all. It seems like that is what you are doing so I think you are all good there.

BTW one thing you ARE doing correctly (IMHO) is formatting your nodes. It’s the equivalent of good-commenting so when you have to come back to something it will save you time, and us having to decipher it back to you. Keep it up.

I can’t see you doing anything obviously incorrect here.

Performance-wise to echo what Blyxzen said, things are going to cost you when turned on. GI in particular (Lumen) is a resource-hog; remember what used to take (and can still take today) HOURS of compute time to pre-calculate lightmaps is being done on-the-fly at runtime. Lumen was never going to be cheap, just-functional in what it does and the best we can hope for today is ‘acceptable’. I WANT faster, get me, but we are somewhat turning a corner on shifting technologies and compute-shaders so we have to deal with it as it is.

Just for sake of visual fidelity/comparison, I have Ultra Dynamic Sky, Lumen, Nanite, the whole bit, I just decided to lean into all of it vs hand-crafting LOD’s and the like. A real “heck”-it moment if you get my meaning. :smiley: Performance is not-great. I’m not getting 100’s of frames, but I with the newer features I do notice that the more I turn on/add the less-overall it costs me.

“Nanite-grass costs me a whole 15 FPS when I turn it on! Stat whatever shows a much larger X vs otherwise.” Very true, and in my case very true. Yet when I try to scale up the density of the grass 2x 3x, sometimes more the added cost is usually just a few more frames, that just turning it on is more-expensive yes, but ought to scale more favorably and top out sooner. So there is a trade-off in up-front cost and features. If you need them or want to use them, then just be prepared to pay for it. Epic themselves says at best they want to target 60 FPS. It’s not going to be like my rig when I load into BF4, a 10 year old, very-optimized game.

This also applies to lumen and whatnot, all of the new/shiney stuff. We’re simply doing more and different (arguably), better things and it was never going to be cheaper, there was no nifty-trick I know we all wanted (I did!), so here we are.

Editor perf is non-representative of a packaged build, you should at the very least be testing in a full-screen standalone game.

Diagnostic wise, look into the stat commands. I add this to my character so I can press-release keys and show useful diagnostic menus, you can extend it as you need to. Copy/Paste the code from the block into a your char it should populate (made on 553).

Stat Unitgraph is one I left out, that is a good command. I find with Nanite/Lumen the engine tries to target that 70% threshold rather consistantly. If you are using TAA with upscaling r.screenpercentage is a command you can play around with too. I find 87/75/67 to be good starting points, with 75 being a good compromise.

You say you don’t use landscape layer blends, how much of a performance difference does that give you? And how do you do it? Could you maybe provide links to the original suggestion and how to do it?

Also, that’s a lot of code… I had to scroll back up 1/4 way through to close it because I didn’t feel like scrolling all the way down it :blush: From what you said, it is supposed to give performance info while running PIE? And how exactly do I implement it lol? I’m kinda new to advanced profiling :slight_smile:

When you are running your game, hit the tilde key, ~. This opens the console if you have it enabled.

Within you can type a variety of commands, one set of which is Stat XXXX where XXXX is some part of the engine, like ‘stat gpu’, ‘stat unit’, or ‘stat unitgraph’.

What I pasted was this stuff:

I bound the press of a key to run the commands to turn stat menus on and the release to run them again and turn them off, so i can press-hold a key to get whatever info I set into the command. You can make them yourself in your project if you want. The important part are the stat-commands themselves. Based on what you are using you might want one or more of them, but there are some general ones you want to get used to:

You can see here Stat GPU gives me timing on how long nanite took to sort itself (Nanite VisBuffer, the volumetric clouds, volumetric-fog, etc, etc. There are MANY menus, just type stat and use arrows to scroll through the autocomplete. The STAT menus should be listed in a distinct color.

At some point you are going to have to look into what effort is being spent where, outside a material. Benchmarking from a material is great and all, but there are other things it may have the engine do base on it’s LOD, is it on nanite, what shader-model you are using, etc. Thus knowing how to dig into performance metrics is very handy. EDIT: as far as the do-not-use-landscape-blarg-blah-hate it was MostHostLA (lol). he was actually the first person to ever reply to my first post (and the effort was totally crap). but therein he suggested sidestepping the layer-logic, and I did, never looked back. As far as the perf boost it was decent at the time 15-20 fps based on how I was making things, but I haven’t gone back to test.

I moved away from using extant-painted layers as much as possible and I bake alphas to static textures, using either a texture-array or UDIM setup to section them off across the landscape. You can also use Runtime Virtual Textures as an information-sink, they work pretty performantly. I tried using them both as PBR information and Alpha information, but ultimately with nanite, chucked them aside as I came out ahead without them.

So I took another look, and I only found 1 thing that I’m not sure is causing your issue, but may.

In your second picture, where you’re calculating the projection weights, your InverseLerp node doesn’t appear to be clamped, but VisualTechArt’s is.

If you click on the node, there should be settings in your details panel allowing you to clamp the value. I only skimmed through the video and I don’t know what that value should be clamped to, you’ll probably have to re-watch it.

Given it’s for projection weights, it may be what’s causing your issues. If not, could you send some screenshots of your problems? There’s no way I know of to import .uasset files like the material you’ve shared, so I can’t get my hands on it.

Other than that, I didn’t notice any other issues. Again, I’m knee-deep in my own never-ending Unreal struggles right now, so my attention is kinda divided. :confused:

These are all great points.

I second Ultra Dynamic Sky (UDS). It’s a fantastic plugin for all it does (especially for its cost), and it’s even more performant than Unreal’s default Sky + Clouds (just found that out a few days ago).

The newer technologies are definitely more expensive, and I could go a rant about that (but I won’t). I personally have chosen to avoid most of them. I’m actively in the process of walking back some bad Nanite meshes and converting them into traditional LODs. There are definitely times to not use the newer technologies.

Nanite, from my experience, is great at scalability. It comes with an overhead, but you can pack much more into your scenes. If you need a lot of something in a scene, Nanite is probably the way to go, because it will cost less in the long run. Plus, Nanite isn’t an “all or nothing” tool; you can choose what meshes to enable it on, and what not to, and you should figure out what that is (generally speaking, continuous meshes, like rocks, are great for Nanite. Trees or any complex foliage like that, not so much).

If your computer doesn’t take forever to do compile a blank project or you have one of those ready and you’re willing to try it, I might suggest doing it in a blank project just in case it breaks something. But I would be very careful maneuvering it around any projects you care about :wink: don’t want anything disastrous to happen.
