Being an Indie

Hello, Martina here! I’m the Epic for Indies initiative manager and most importantly a former indie developer. As I see it, being an indie is about embracing creativity, passion, and the freedom to explore your own vision. It’s also about taking risks, experimenting with unique ideas, and crafting games that resonate with your personal experiences and stories. I’m here to invite you - INDIE DEV- to become a part of our community where we value collaboration, support, and shared learning.

Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience, there’s a place for you here. Connect with fellow developers, share your projects, and learn from each other. Together, we can celebrate the indie spirit and encourage one another to create amazing games that leave a significant mark on our players. Come introduce yourself on our forums and become a part of our community!

glad you joined the community

I am a bit confused? Is this a call for people to become part of some new Epic’s Indie Dev Community you forget to post a link to? Or are you just asking people who are already on this forum to become part of this forum?

You mentioned " Epic for Indies initiative". Is this some new thing we should expect to be announced?

She posted an search engine for getting in touch for local game devs via Discord, in another thread. In a way, it’s kind of useful; but I really don’t care much for that app. Plus, the 3 in my state are in areas that I’ll never live in

And a!so, they’ve created an new, (probably redundant) subforum and they’ve launched their own Discord server. I get that they mean well, but then again it’s their own forum

Thanks. I guess I am getting old but to me Epic Community overall seems to have overgrown into a maze. There’s just so many different weird modes and sections of this site I have no clue where half of the content resides.

I get it now. The Epic for Indies is new “sort of forum mode” where the posts can be seen both from the Unreal Engine forum section and Epic for Indies forum section. So when you arrive to this thread from the regular Unreal Engine forum mode, it’s very confusing to know what’s going on.

TBH, what would help me, as an Indie developer, would be if Epic stopped fracturing community into more sub communities, and cleaned up this community site instead. All I got is yet another segregated space (with its own separate discord server) to hunt for new posts and content in.

Well, stuff like this has been going on for years. Usually, it gets shunted off to Discord or another app. But late!y, it’s been an bit of an obligation to have one of these apps if you want to get somewhere

I think the idea is this…

On the community page there is a tab bar, for selecting communities.

The probem is the whole site… It’s not clear (1) what HOME is and (2) what the main nav menu is. Things don’t stand out. I’m only now getting the impression that “Community” = home, we select a community, and then travel into forums. I’m only now starting to see how this site is structured. Too many elements blending into each other.

Yes. I have same impression. Every time I come here it’s almost instant sensory overload.

^This^…

Epic is throwing everything at the wall right-now to see what sticks (hoping to boost the Community / attract people). But after logging in, couldn’t even navigate back to this thread quickly, after all the cross-links for Epic-for-indies / Indies / Announcements…

So a feature that’d help hugely, is a filter to filter-out all the noise. This is badly needed because of all the Spam, plus Fortnite bloat or lazy low-value posts on here that are almost spam-like, contaminating every forum and thread everywhere (even legacy UDK).

[FEATURE REQUEST]: It’d be amazing to see a custom-view (pattern-match permanently stored) that only shows threads / posts that are helpful to current projects. So when you visit the forums you see a CUSTOM VIEW of what’s relevant to your work and less of the OVERLOAD

Example: Need to find posts all about Online-Multiplayer (gotchas)… Local-Multiplayer (gotchas)… World-Partition (gotchas)… Level-Streaming (gotchas)… Physics (gotchas)… Landscape (gotchas)… All the other stuff is really just noise. Definitely don’t want to have to trawl through 1000’s of Fortnite posts just to get to that. :rage:

However, Epic don’t devote enough resources to moderation on here. The spam issue that’s overwhelming them right-now proves this. So not sure there’s a future for the forums. Maybe there isn’t. As the push for AI for everything continues, it may mean just bots chatting to other bots very soon.

That actually happened, yesterday in regards to their usual routine. But there should be an way to mute specific subforums, since I don’t even play Fortnite.

And in regards with the unmentionables, the mod team is usually on the ball with taking care of it. As for the tickets that I’ve filed a few days ago, not so much

BTW anyone else getting endlessly repeating unread reply/like notifications from random people in this particular thread?

Remember that once before (but good luck finding past posts on here).
Is it happening on the Discourse Website, or is it just the Forums App?
