Hey guys I cant seem to find a way to assign materials to a specific section of polys. In this case I am trying to make the scope of my rifle glass. How would I go about doing this?
Hi ZephyrSouza,
This would need to be setup in your modeling application to assign polygons to specific material IDs.
If you’re using Max or Maya I can help you with this process, but I’m not familiar with any other modeling programs. There are some tutorials out there for Max/Maya for doing this. I’m sure there are for the other programs as well.
Let me know.
Tim
I am using 3ds Max 2015. I have already assigned materials but unwrapped the model itself. Would assigning new materials mess with the unwrap?
Assigning the materials will not alter your UVs or make this an issue.
Typically when I use multiple material IDs you can have overlapping uvs for your texture UV and since the polygons have their own material ID you don’t have to worry about the overlapping uvs affecting the other materials that have different IDs.
It can sound confusing, and in case I’ve been kind of confusing think of it this way. If you have a box with 6 sides. Each side is a different Material ID and the each face is taking up the entirety of the 0,1 UV space so that all 6 faces are overlaid on each other. You don’t have to worry about the other materials on the polygons affecting another since they are on separate material IDs.
I hope that helps.
Tim
