Additional Notes

this is a fresh install of windows all runtimes and Epic Games Launcher

I’m having the same problem with my plugin and with some others that need to be updated. Update button does not work and uninstalling and installing shows 1.0 instead of 1.2

IM having same issue Win 11, 23H2. i have tried all the suggestions of clearing cache etc to no avail. I have updated at least a dozen times and it keeps returning to ā€˜Needs Updating’ Would be great to get the fix for this.

Same problem here as well, it’s been going on for a long time tbh, but finally decided to see if others were having similar issues. No fix has worked for me either.

Same boat here.

Getting kinda stale.

I also have the same problem as well and i have also tried all the recommended fixes like Clear the Launcher Web Cache etc

Same for me. It’s been weeks… Even the recent launcher update did not fix it.

Things I’ve tried doing:

  1. Clear the ā€œwebcacheā€ in EpicGames Launcher folder
  2. Clear the data of the assets in ā€œVaultCacheā€
  3. Uninstalling and reinstalling Launcher, UE 5.6, and VS2022 (cause I’m a C++ programmer)

Still nothing. Guess we’ll just have to wait until the developers fix the problem themselves.

I’m having the same issue with my products. I’m able to create a new project if I go to the FAB page for the product, but nothing happens when I click on Create Project or Update from the Vault list.

Is there any update on a fix for this issue?

Fab Library assets in Epic Games Launcher show endless update loop — update only verifies files, then update markers return after Launcher restart

Description

I am experiencing a persistent bug in the Epic Games Launcher under Unreal Engine → Fab Library.

For about a month, all downloaded Fab Library assets are marked as having an available update. When I click Update, the Launcher does not appear to download a real update. It only performs a verification-like process and then reports the operation as complete. However, after I close and reopen the Epic Games Launcher, the same assets are again marked as needing an update.

This creates an infinite update loop. The Launcher repeatedly tells me Fab assets need updates, but the assets do not actually update, no meaningful download occurs, and the update state is not preserved after restart.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher.

  2. Go to Unreal Engine.

  3. Open Fab Library.

  4. Find downloaded Fab assets marked with the orange update indicator.

  5. Click Update on one or more assets.

  6. Wait for the process to finish.

  7. Observe that the process behaves like verification rather than a real download.

  8. Close the Epic Games Launcher completely.

  9. Reopen the Epic Games Launcher.

  10. Go back to Unreal Engine → Fab Library.

  11. Observe that the same assets are again marked as needing updates.

Expected Result

After updating a Fab Library asset, the Launcher should either:

  • download the real updated asset files, or

  • correctly recognize that the local asset is already current,

and the update marker should disappear permanently unless a newer asset version is actually published later.

Observed Result

The Launcher appears to verify local files instead of downloading a real update. After restarting the Launcher, the same assets are again marked as needing updates. This repeats indefinitely.

Frequency

Always. The issue persists across Launcher restarts.

Impact

This makes the Fab Library unreliable because I cannot tell which assets truly have updates. It also wastes time because the Launcher repeatedly prompts for updates that do not actually update anything.

Platform

  • Platform: Epic Games Launcher

  • Section: Unreal Engine → Fab Library

  • OS: Windows 11

  • Affected content: Downloaded Fab Library packs/assets, assets already present locally / previously added to projects

  • Approximate start: About one month ago

Troubleshooting already tried

  • Restarted Epic Games Launcher.

  • Updated assets multiple times.

  • Closed and reopened Launcher.

  • Refreshed Fab Library.

  • The same update markers return.

Other users on the Epic Developer Community forums report similar behavior even after clearing cache, reinstalling the Launcher, moving vault folders, using default directories, running as administrator, and checking manifests, so this appears likely to be a Fab/Launcher metadata or server-state issue rather than a normal local install issue.

I’m experiencing this as well and it’s just a bit too annoying. I’ve tried everything, up to and including reinstalling windows 11, downloading the epic launcher anew from the microsoft store app and creating a brand new epic account just to test it (I’ll admit it was the nuclear option but I have the curse of needing to figure everything out myself). Spoiler alert… it’s still happening (tested with the megaplants assets). I’ve been learning unreal engine for 6 years now, collecting every free asset available and creating environments, which I mostly enjoyed, until ā€œfabā€ that is. Epic’s implementation of and transition to ā€œfabā€ (I even hate the name…) has frustrated me so thoroughly that I was already considering giving up on unreal engine entirely and trying to make a less graphically ambitious game in Godot, then this new issue came along and has possibly pushed me passed my limits. Even if they fix this, the experience of using the epic launcher and fab makes me feel like making a game tied to epic might not be as good of an idea as I once believed. I’ve always been attracted to cutting edge video game graphics, and making a 3D game, but making a game more like animal well or stardew valley in Godot is looking more and more like the right move at this point, especially as a solo developer. I’m starting to feel like I may have been wasting my time with unreal engine and epic games, but the sunk cost fallacy is real…
