Ask Epic Anything: Creator Portal and IARC | October 11, 2023 at 11:00 AM ET

Regarding the ratings system and its questionnaire.
1} If we are now being rated on a range of things from drugs, sexual content and things like blood and gore, does this mean in the future we will see more mature themes enter the creative space? Specifically in terms of Horror blood and gore etc? or that all games, creations and projects will have to keep at a standard of staying aligned with the same game ratings as Fortnite itself.

2} Most games feature of course weapons, but there is no blood or gore. Its more in the terms of cartoon violence. Would we then say yes there’s violence even if there’s no gore? no blood? making it I assume more of a T for teen rating. OR do we then say no and it becomes more of a E for everyone type rating?

3} What consequences could we see moving forward for wrong ratings and taking advantage of the system as a whole? Especially against someone who accidently mislabels their creation VS someone trying to cheat the system constantly. is it just warnings? a warning and a ban? losing their code and or publishing rights or access to creative? does it depend on how well the creator or teams history has been up to that point? of their merit?

Regarding the creative Portal.
1} Under the new section “What Has Changed from the Previous Release?” does this mean literally anything? Gameplay, the name, the thumbnail/art etc.? OR does it only pertain to things that would specifically change the rating?

(I realize this is probably in place for when a change must be made if it is determined by the reviewers to have the wrong rating and it needs changed, fixed or adjusted.)

For instance, if I have a map that is rated E, let’s say it’s a Hang out social type map, but I change it to a FFA with weapons, id assume it then becomes rated T. But if I have the name as (example) “Only Ups” and change it to “Ups Only” do I report that change? OR if something small like that doesn’t pertain to the ruling and won’t be affected by the rating system?

2} Continued from the question above. If nothing at all has changed, and we are just trying to publish it, for instance because we have to before November 14th to still have them in discovery and try to earn players, would we then simply type “Nothing” and move on to the ratings questionnaire.

3} Under the question asking for 2 emails, is this for everyone or is one sufficient? Because while testing before the AMA on one of my creations it only required 1.

is there option to not like get paid cuz i want that i just want to make maps without getting paid (i know it kinda sounds stupid but yeah)

If I do just about anything with the violence section, the Russian (and sometimes German) rating goes up to 16+. The only violence in the map is just same-as-usual Fortnite BR violence. Is there a way to put ‘violence’ without such an extreme rating?

I’ve been working on some islands for a while and as their latest versions are back from 2022, I can’t add ratings to them. Will there be functionality for it? I don’t want to get my islands removed because of me not having enough time to finish the updates.

I tried doing the rating for a Fortnite Creative Horror map of mine since the IARC was released for us creators, but now my map will be unavailable everywhere except in North America… And the reason being listed is because it’s horror. I had no issues with my map being available globally before, so this is really concerning. I’m wondering if I’m just misunderstanding the checklist in the rating system, or if horror is really unallowed in Fortnite for Europe (as an example)?

Hi Gwynnie, and Becky, I would like to understand how we can use the new Creator pages the best. Could you please share insights into what they were designed to cover?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for introducing the new IARC system to Fortnite’s creative development. Many of us find it extremely valuable!

In the IARC Rating section, it asks for two email addresses. Can we use the same email address for both the Team’s IARC certificate and public customer service contact? Many of us have a single business email.

AMA Guidelines reminder!

AMA GUIDELINES:

  • Use the Reply button at the bottom. Please read through the questions to see if your question has already been asked, before posting your own.
  • Please do not reply to anyone else’s post—replies should only come from Epic. If you’d like to discuss a related topic in more detail, create a new topic.
  • Keep in mind, this is not a support session. Questions that are specific to your islands, account, or troubleshooting will be removed.
  • Don’t forget to have fun!

On the Creator Portal Analytics page it constantly includes Private Islands in the lists making them hard to go through without manually searching.

  • Can we have an option to not show ‘Private Islands’?

  • Can we get an option to save presets for specific islands we want to show on a regular basis?

  • Under ‘Game XP’ the accolades are not labeled. Is there a way to have the labels show up? Not sure if this is a bug or user error.

  • Will we get more analytics data for our maps that might include: platform, user ages, gender, location, etc.?

Thanks so much for the AMAs, I find them very helpful!

Are weapons in Fortnite violent?

Question: With the new IARC questionnaire in play, how do we define ‘violence’ in Fortnite? Especially when it comes to weapons, what’s the plan for handling this classification? All of my games have been previously made to be all age friendly but now, even my Prop Hunts feel like they’re at risk of being blocked from half the Fortnite player base.

Here’s an example. https://x.com/Velasco_uefn/status/1714043458027983100?s=20

Thankful for your amazing team!

Questions from Landscape on Discord:

  1. Should islands such as Art (Images) not be classified or not? Should unlisted islands be graded or not? If all is well, the islands won’t be removed and the images won’t be deleted?

  2. The approved publication indicates that the IARC has approved the classification?

  3. Why haven’t you made the personalization of the creators’ page available to all creators? On other social networking platforms you don’t have to be 18, including ArtStation.

  4. Not a question, but Europe has pegi 16 when something is supposed to be 12 like a gun game or prop unt. Others (Except in certain countries) are 12 and Europe is 16, whereas Fortnite is pegi 12 in Europe.

The option that changes is "If defenseless people, I put no, because at first I had put yes, but it seems not to be allowed, so indicate me more precisely, so that I am not punished while I do my best please. I’m very serious about classification and it’s something that affects me enormously.

Also:

We need options related to Fortnite Creative? If it’s a Gun Game, a parkour? This would allow you to define the overall point of view of the map without having to detail and specify everything, as the slightest error can cause problems.

How is Fortnite allowed in Russia when it has violence on it?

Adding more from my earlier questions.

Is there anyway we will have a better guide posted either in creative portal or here on the forum, if not both, to what each core game mode is considered. Such as Deathrun, Gun Game, Red VS Blue, etc. Because for instance, Deathruns do not normally have weapons, but of course you do or can die in game, let alone the name death is in the title of the genre in most cases. So does that in turn go in guide lines with violence or even fear?

To someone who quietly deletes this question:
Please keep it so the team can answer.

Is Fortnite voice chat moderated? How does it work? Who moderates the voice chat?

I am asking because this is one of the IARC questions. As per FAQ,

Is voice chat really moderated or is it a typo and it should say NO in FAQ?

  1. Would it be possible for you to provide a fully filled out example Questionnaire based on Fortnite: Battle Royale? As many creative games run off of similar gameplay and themes, so therefore would have a similar rating. As previous questions have mentioned, Ratings seem to be inconsistent, such as the 16+ in Russia for Example.

  2. Within the Creator Portal, are there plans for a feature to straight up DELETE an island? Both from Golden Rift/UEFN and/or the Publicly Released code? I have some really old islands that still have a public code that hasn’t been played on in months, so would be handy to be able just to wipe them clear. This would also act as a workaround for the “Island not appearing in golden rift” glitch for those who want to delete those islands.

  3. Are there any plans on more features for the recently released creator pages? Such as Sections you can group maps in, such as “Zone Wars” and “Deathruns”. Would this also be reflected in the in-game “More from this Creator” page?

  4. Are there any plans for Maps to be grouped together in their own “Playlist”; Similar to how Battle Royale is a singular playlist, but within that Playlist there’s the options for Solo, Duo, Trios and Squads?

Hi! I am a horror map maker and my maps do not contain any violence or content that can be considered +16, yet my maps are affected just for having jumpscares, will we horror map makers be so affected by limiting the scope of our maps just for the fact of being horror?

And another question not related to the topic, I have maps that do not use weapons, such as pure parkour, those maps still have to put the violence box just for being Fortnite?

And last question is, there is no room for error? The form is very confusing and there is very little explanation, I filled a form and by mistake (confusion really) and an email told me that I was lying in the form and that my account could be banned for this, when really I did not lie, it’s just that the form is too confusing, then the creators will be punished for not understanding very well how the system works?

Thanks

Haboo-gee! As a huge Unreal+UT fan I have a few quick questions which I’m sure you will gladly answer:

  1. Why have Epic effectively killed the Unreal franchise by removing classic Unreal titles from all stores?
  2. Will you restore classic Unreal+UT games on at least your own store?
  3. Is it legal to download pirated copies of now abandoned classic Unreal titles?
  4. Do you consider creating a remaster of Unreal+RTNP?

Right now we are focused on this ratings rollout and content cannot exceed Fortnite’s Teen rating.

If a game is above the maximum rating their parent or guardian set for their account, the island will display a lock icon, and will need to be unlocked with a parental pin in order to play.

Each regional rating is determined by a set of factors that varies depending on sensitivities in that region. Games that contain some themes will be rated higher in some regions and lower in others.
