Art directing Niagara Smoke

Hello, I am struggling with art directing a simple Niagara based cigarette smoke trail simulation. Scene lit with Lumen.

It all looks really good on viewport when simulating the scene but when rendering the sequence the smoke looks super sharp and not very smoke like at all. Furthermore the smoke produces crazy dark shadows that I don’t have any control over: Only way to see any shadows is casting ray traced shadows and Translucency self shadowing controls do not affect it at all.

I cannot get my head around this. I suppose it is a matter of a few settings.

You may need to adjust several settings to make the smoke appear less sharp and more diffused. You can try the following:

  • Smoothing: You can adjust the smoothing settings of the smoke particles to make them appear more rounded and less sharp.
  • Noise: Adding noise to the smoke simulation can help to break up the uniformity of the smoke and make it appear more organic.
  • Transparency: You may need to adjust the transparency of the smoke material to make it more translucent and less opaque.
  • Lighting: If the smoke is producing dark shadows, you can try to adjust the lighting in your scene to make it less contrasty and more evenly lit. You can also adjust the translucency shadows settings to make the shadows softer and less intense.

It’s also worth noting that the final look of the smoke simulation can also be affected by the quality of the renderer and the resolution of the final image. You may need to adjust these settings to get the desired level of detail in your smoke simulation.

Great, Thanks!

I managed to get some control over this with your tips. Very much appreciated!

Awesome! I am glad I could be of help!
