Summary
Doesn’t appear when placed. Appears with all crazy shapes cut in it that plainly do not exist in my map at all. This would be an F if it were a middle school project. You can’t even see it or what you’re doing. It’s not user error, not a learning curve, it’s design, function, and UI are not smartly or effectively programmed. I’m not being mean, calling things what they are is how they get fixed. Reporting water in general as a bug.
What Type of Bug are you experiencing?
Editor
Steps to Reproduce
Use an ocean or river.
Expected Result
Expect it to work correctly. Appear. Accept/recognize/reflect changes made. Update in-editor in REAL time, like professional/enterprise/adult software. Not exhibit full brain damage by making up random blank spaces.
Observed Result
Doesn’t appear when placed. Appears with all crazy shapes cut in it that plainly do not exist in my map at all (not usually but the fact it’s ever happened with zero cause is clown shoes). This would be an F if it were a middle school project. You can’t even see it or what you’re doing. It’s not user error, not a learning curve, it’s design, function, and UI are not smartly or effectively programmed. I’m not being mean, just calling things what they are is how they get fixed. The smartness of the design of the water, how it renders, and it’s UI are specifically the bug; a refactor is called for. Nobody cares about the brilliant features of water when overall it doesn’t work coherently. You see the issue with constantly bolting bits of gold onto a dumpster fire? We don’t get to see the gold. The issue isn’t that it never works, just never consistently and rarely correctl Reporting water in general as a bug.
Affects Versions
5.8
Platform(s)
Windows
Additional Notes
Yes its overlapping land, level height, all plugged in. If there’s anything else that needed to be done, it’s still programmed wrong because the UI is fishtank IQ. A user is not expected to engage in such incoherent levels of workarounds and diagnoses in actual professional-grade software.
“Just nudge it,” would be childish as an official workaround, and it doesn’t usually work anyway.
Discussion (Broader)
Also why did y’all lock the ability to add visibility to water? You have a whole tutorial up about visibility and water and it’s worthless, so, you look foolish. Apparently the feature is blocked? Idk why it’s blocked, but I do know it would be childish to block this feature on some fake problem like, “oh people will cheat so we had to remove this basic function.”
I have a gaming PC with a significant cache upgrade, the most bandwidth commercially available and a motherboard that can handle it, and a 64 GB paging file. This is programmed incorrectly. Nobody cares if it’s working as intended; it’s not working intelligently or functionally. This is not professional or even middle school project grade, the way water works in this editor. At least stop making snide jokes about Unity cuz nobody else has the kinds of problems Unreal does.
3 other unresolved issues encountered again just while making this post: ctrl+ commands intermittently go out, not sure if tied to obnoxious popups with incorrect error messages. “Remember device” still doesn’t work (enter a 2FA code on EVERY login for no reason even after using a passkey). The forum still accuses members of editing in another window when that’s false (the incorrect errors), keeps opening dumb annoying popups. Oh, new 4th issue: It dumbly accuses users of not having filled out a field. Took a screenshot just cuz it was so stupid I had to. Can’t submit, have to redo–Typical disrespect of our time and zero problem by Epic wasting it and continuing to waste it when we report the same dysfunctions for years and keep throwing billions at y’all (at normal jobs, we wouldn’t be able to keep them or pay for games if we just acted like this about the bathrooms flooding or the ingredients being years expired). Coding forums is a 90’s skill y’all. Nobody’s mad about bugs, we’re mad you disrespect us and make the industry a joke by ignoring them forever while blowing the money we give y’all on other stuff we didn’t ask for and that doesn’t fix our problems or get us good games or give y’all job security, clearly.
Everything does not have to be exhaustively broken with that much revenue, and sadly I cannot bold the period at the end of this sentence. Seriously do your engineers not use this software ever? This is not okay. Some humility, perspective, and more mature management of priorities are called for by Epic leadership. Fix the first things and stop throwing bits of gold into a dumpster fire. If there’s no fire and you’re infallible and there’s no such thing as bad design but only unnecessary and incoherent learning curves and ‘user error,’ then where are the games? Basics not working correctly and a dumpster fire of a user interface design, complete absence of self-flagging of issues by the editor, and documentation being maybe 20% complete (not a professional approach guys) are why people aren’t making games with your stuff.
