Any roadmap updates on Mover?

Is there any update to the roadmap for the Mover feature? We’re currently in the early planning stages of a new project, and are starting to evaluate the animation and character movement systems we have available in UE5.8. The GASP sample project seems like the best indication of what Epic recommends as the best practices for new projects, and makes heavy use of both Motion Matching and Mover, but Mover is still marked as Experimental and has multiple warnings in documentation etc that it is subject to change. We’re expecting to move up to 5.9 (and future 5.x updates) when they become available, so it would be helpful to get some indication of what kind of change to expect.

Given Mover has been in Experimental since UE5.4, is it reasonable to expect that it has mostly stabilised at this point? Would it be reasonable to expect it to move out of Experimental and into Beta at some point soon? Will Mover continue to receive support and updates in the future, or has development focus moved to some other system/solution for character movement?

Any recommendations or suggestions about what to expect in the next few updates would be appreciated! We want to make sure that our development plan aligns with Epic’s plans for the rest of UE5’s lifespan.

Hey there,

Given Mover has been in Experimental since UE5.4, is it reasonable to expect that it has mostly stabilised at this point?

We intended to hit beta for 5.8 but weren’t quite ready for prime time. Some API elements are still changing, but we recommend people use it if they are early in their project. It is currently unclear exactly what changes will move from main into our 5.9 release.

Will Mover continue to receive support and updates in the future, or has development focus moved to some other system/solution for character movement?

Mover intends to be our underlying actor and replicated movement system for the future. Watching Main on Git would still be a good idea.

Any recommendations or suggestions about what to expect in the next few updates would be appreciated! We want to make sure that our development plan aligns with Epic’s plans for the rest of UE5’s lifespan.

Regarding UE5’s lifespan, since we’ve announced 5.9 Seoul, that is now our current last release before 6.0. The intended focus is AI tooling, and a few more features may come through, but I wouldn’t bank on it.

A couple of areas that have improved recently are replicated attachments, making things like replicated vehicle and passenger scenarios much better than they were previously. We have also implemented better support for looping montages, but have not set up support for jump sections in montages.

As mentioned, we’ll continue to improve and invest in Mover, and we are recommending that people use it.

Dustin
