Any idea how to achieve terrain deformation ?

Hi everyone !

I’m trying to achieve something like this (the deformation under the boat) :

And in order to do this, I tried to follow this dude’s tutorial (he uses Render Targets): Unreal Engine 4 Tutorial - Reactive Snow/Mud - YouTube

It works, but it isn’t really realistic :
