I am experiencing failed file transfers from both my iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Mini for Animator. I can actually see the transfer happening in the correct ingested folder on my laptop, but as soon as the transfer appears to be complete, it fails and wipes out the take in the folder. Super odd. The error message indicates failing to convert the .mov file to an image sequence (see attached images).
That makes me think it has something to do with the decoders on Windows… not sure if UE is using windows codec resources in the background or not. I did update my Windows codec pack to make sure .mov was covered, but to no avail. Any insight anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
System Specs:
ProArt Studiobook H7600ZX_H7600ZX
12th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-12700H, 2300 Mhz, 14 Core(s), 20 Logical Processor(s
32GB RAM
3TB SSD
Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti for Laptop
Microsoft Windows 11 Education (intentionally installed for least bloated Windows build)
I can’t even get my phone to connect over wifi. I have an iPhone 14. I put in the IP Address and checked that the PC and iPhone are on the same network. Capture Manager just thinks the device is offline with no connection.
I had no issues with connecting to Capture Manager either. I also updated to the latest iOS as of this moment (16.5). It’s just odd to see everything transferring over in real-time and the other ingest files being created on the fly and then have them all completely disappear from the ingest folder when the transfer fails. I also have plenty of storage on the drive I’m transferring to… still troubleshooting.
UPDATE: This is less of a file transfer issue and more of a file conversion issue. Whether I use the Live Face Link Connection or Archive, one the following two errors occur:
Issue with opening the MOV file
Issue with converting the MOV file to an image sequence
Again, this leads me to believe the issue is codec related, either native to UE or Windows.
I installed the following Windows codec pack with no change.
I also enabled all of the following codec related plugins in the engine with no change:
If you see this happening again could you take a look in the Output Log window to see if there is something there that might explain the reason the conversion failed? You can access it “Window → Output Log”.

Hi @mcleary… Here is my most recent log file showing an error when trying to open the .mov file. I do see “Error: Cannot open the audio file” just before the same error for the video file… hopefully you have some additional insight:

There are a couple of things you can try to diagnose the problem.
Try to playback the video file in the phone to see if it will open. Maybe the video got corrupted for some reason
Try to copy the takes to your computer using iTunes and see if you can playback the video files without issues
If this works, you try to create a Capture Source using Live Link Archives as the type and point it to the folder where you’ve copied the files using iTunes. See if you are going to get the same log output or if this will work
If everything else failed, check if you have enough space in the phone
Playback on phone for video files looks good in LLF.
I saved the take to iCloud, downloaded to my computer and it plays in both iTunes as well as Windows Media Player
I created a LLA Capture Source. All of the following files were part of the zip file I downloaded from iCloud:
On my attempted import, I have the same following log output showing errors:

Lastly, my 64GB iPhone mini and 256GB iPhone 12 Pro Max have 37GB and 40GB of storage available, respectively.
As an additional precaution, I made sure that the naming conventions for the Animator assets all had the same name “iPhone”, which also matched the video file.
I’m at a loss. I would love for this to be escalated to the Animator team… is that possible?
Unfortunatelly there is nothing indicating the reason for this failure. The only variable is that you’re using the Windows 11 Education Edition. Are you able to try importing your footage on a regular windows installation? The idea is to try to identity if the issue is with Windows or MetaHuman Animator as the Capture Manager is working fine for most users.
Hey Y’all, I was also having issues. It got fixed when setting the capture source path directly to a take folder, rather than a folder containing many take folders.
Well, tried another time with iphone connection and it worked, so my problem was with file transfer. Video was converted from .mov somehow and the errror occured. Via wifi transfering all wend good. Don’t know if this helps, but still…
Thanks @mr3d_guy and @Dirtyradiation1… earlier in this thread, I realized the issue was with file conversion and not with the transfer itself. I realized this after saving the take to iCloud, downloading it to my machine and setting up the files as an archive. I still got the same errors.
I intentionally installed Windows 11 Education to keep my OS streamlined and not bloated, but I may need to update to Windows 11 Pro… just want to make sure I try everything possible before spending the cash!
If anyone joins this thread and experiences the same file conversion issues while on Windows 11 Education, please let me know!
