Animation on 2D plane

Hello,

What’s the approach to get an animation/clip playing on a flat 2D plane? Imagine if you have a small video clip for instance it’s a frog moving that has a black background so can we apply this to that 2D plane and play it in a way that black background serves as alpha so only the frog is shown?

So to say something like this can be played on a flat plane but without the black background is that doable? or are there limitations, downgrading the quality etc.?
