Advice for large resolution renders

Hi,

I'm trying to render some large 8k resolution renders for prints, with pathtracing.

With the 4k render taking less then 2 minutes it surprised me that the 8k is taking about an hour (still in progress, since the cancel button isn't working). Since it's only about 4 times the pixels.

It also makes rendering 360 visuals at decent quality challenging/time consuming.

Is there anything I can tweak in the settings to improve this speed? Or is this a limitation for TM or maybe depending on the graphics card (RTX 3080).

Is the render quality good enough if I turn the path tracing settings way down because the higher resolution would compenstate for this?

Hello ,

If you're exporting at higher resolutions than 4K, higher export times are expected, especially when working with panoramas, Path Tracer, Refinement, or videos, and this is largely due to GPU limitations.

In our 2022.2 Preview 2 update, we added a new feature specifically for higher resolutions renders above 4K to help with this. Using tiled rendering, it allows you to export images and videos at resolutions beyond the limitations of GPU memory. You can enable this in the Output > Format settings of an image or video. Enabling this option will still have high render times, but since it offloads some of the work from the GPU memory to the system memory, you should notice some improvements. You should note that screen space effects are limited when this is enabled.

Regarding Path Tracer, quality can depend on how your scene is arranged. In general, lower quality Path Tracer settings can often work fine in exterior renderings. With interior renderings, you may notice a larger difference, so this might require more trial and error to tune to your liking.

Something similar happens to me: anyone know why with the latest version of TM 2023.1 is impossible to export pics larger than 1920x1080 (full HD)? I can select other options as 4K or 8K, or 16K but when selected automatically the resolution of the pics decrease at a deformed square ratio of 1080x1080 dpi, even if I use the tiled rendering didn't work and the result is the same... a squared low res pic in the vewport. Anyone can help me to find a solution? thank you in advance!
