Adding Water Physics to swimming character for Cinematics

So I’m being asked to add realistic water physics to a character animation, to make their swimming more “realistic” I’m not completely sure what angle I should attack this from.

Do I add water physics to a character, or do I create a physics volume to give resistance to the swimming animation, or do I add the physics simulator to the sequencer.

The WIP Weather and water shader was suggested but I’m using 5.0.3 and don’t know its compatibility.
