Access Violation--level crashing everytime I try opening it. HELP!

I was saving something in my map, and restarted the editor, and now it just crashes every time I try opening it the level file (.umap). Crash report blames the source coming from “PhysicalMaterial.cpp” so surely it has something to do with a material? This is the first time I’ve ever reported a crash, so I hope I can provide everything you need.

Not even sure if this is useful but here anyway:

DxDiag (hope this is right)

Please help me get this fixed. I spent months working very hard on this. If you need any other files let me know ASAP.

And yes, I tried making a new project and opening the level file through that. There is something wrong with the level file itself. Please help!!!

Hi Gordon -

Before we get to far ahead of ourselves trying to figure out what happened, let’s see if we can get back into your level.

First, in Windows Explorer, go to you Project Directory. Copy the .umap file for the level you are using to a new location (your desktop is fine.) Then, go into the Saved Sub-directory and into the Backup Folder. There should be a list of .umap and .uasset files. Find the *.umap that was backed up before the crashing started for you. Copy that file and replace the umap file you removed (renaming to the same name as well).

Then Try to open your project again.

Hopefully this will allow you get back into your project with only a minor amount of work lost.

Now to trying to determine the root cause of the crash. With the level causing the crash and looking at the log files, it appears that something was done to your landscape that caused the resultant issue. Can you give me a run down of all the items that you did to your landscape, in particular anything to do with Collision or Physical Material.

Thank You -

Thanks for getting back!

I don’t honestly remember doing anything major with my landscape asset, especially with its collision. I messed with collision settings for other objects, but not my landscape. All I did to the landscape (after making it) was paint it with 5 different textures. I tried erasing those .mat files and it still crashes.

Unfortunately the only .umap files I could find were in the “Autosaves” folder. Two files that are roughly a week old. Neither worked. Not only did I try bringing the newest .umap file (the one I started getting crashes with) into a blank project, but I also tried that with the .umaps in the “autosaves” folder. I’m at a complete loss. It’s definitely something to do with my landscape when I read the report…perhaps you know of a setting I can tick or something? Thanks again!!!

Hi Gordon -

What have you done to the landscape recently, have you adjusted the landscape material, anything you can let me know. You could try to remove the .uasset of the landscape material from the project file to see if the project will open with a missing asset error. You could also try this with any assets which reference the landscape, I would remove them from your project file one at a time to see if you can find the offending asset in which case we can narrow down what caused the issue.

Thank You

Eric Ketchum

Eric,

The most recent thing I’ve done to it was paint an existing layer over another one to add the effect of fake Ambient Occlusion. I did that yesterday and was able to quit, restart and load everything fine. What caused the crash was when I was messing with a particle effect, and deleted it. It crashed the engine, and from there I’ve been unable to start the .umap. Now get this: there are these files here where I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE they came from. They look like thumbnails of my painted materials for the landscape (it was a large landscape with only a very small portion actually being used).

Take a look at this image:

I cannot delete these files, the editor crashes. They appeared when I dragged my .umap file into a blank project too. surely these files are a culprit. Whenever I try to click “Show Location” to attemp to find them on my PC, it just opens to my Documents folder, and they aren’t located anywhere in there. Here is my error when I try to delete them and it crashes:

It is also worth noting that when I did finally get those files to delete without the editor crashing, the level file disappears.

Hi Gordon -

I am currently unable to track down a root cause of your crash without taking a look at your project. If you can link to a downloadable version of your project, I can attempt to continue to debug this issue with you. If you would like to keep it private please feel to use the UE4 Engine Forums Private Message System.
