A detachable rope that ties two sinking objects together?

I am trying to make a red boat steadily sink in a body of water for about 30 minutes. I’m hoping to incorporate a rope attaching that boat to ANOTHER boat (green) that it is also slowly pulling down with it as it sinks. However, I want to make the rope be detachable so if it is removed from the green boat the red boat will just sink on its own and the green boat will remain buoyant and upright. I can’t tell if this is as incredibly complicated as it seems or if this could be done with relative ease. There are a lot of elements at play here, of course. I need a boat that WILL sink no matter what, and a boat that COULD sink if the rope is not removed. I don’t know much about splines, but I feel like the answer I am looking for has to do with splines.

s there a way to create a 30 minute animation that that is predetermined to end once the boat is entirely underwater no matter what? And can I just have a second boat reacting to whatever level of sinking the first boat reaches up until a rope connecting them either is or isn’t removed? I feel certain there is a way to do all of this but I am not sure what it is. If anybody could write me up a quick how-to on it, I would be immensely grateful. Thanks.
