5.3 vs 5.4 Viewport Color Differences (OCIO or Native rec709/sRGB)

TLDR:
Engine 5.3

  • Color is correct in Viewport / Camera View
  • Color is correct in Render MRQ output / Da Vinci Resolve / Nuke

Engine 5.4

  • Color is incorrect in Viewport / Camera View
  • Color is correct in Render MRQ output / Da Vinci Resolve / Nuke

Hello, I am trying to wrap my head around where likely user error might be coming from, but I have not solved this mystery and hoping someone here might help me explore a solution.

I have a viewport difference (color) between a fresh installed engine 5.3 and 5.4.

I noticed it first when opening a 5.3 project into 5.4 (as a copy) which prompted me to make a simple default scene in identical in both version for sanity check.

The weird part is that rendering (with Seq/MVQ) does not show a difference in color between both engines.

image: same simple default project viewport, all settings the same in both engines

image: same working project viewport, all settings the same in both engines

image: same working project render results, all settings the same in both engines

The color setup for above projects just a straightforward native OCIO.
! HOWEVER SAME ISSUE persists in default rec709/sRGB

OCIO_Viewport

I assume that must be something in my end as I cannot fathom that color would change so drastically between different engine versions which would be a nightmare in production.

Thank you !

Solved ! The documentation for native OCIO setup was not fully correct, but a different documentation around the same subject corrects this.

You need to also have the “disable tonemapper” in MRQ, regardless of being in OCIO native or srgb/rec709 with an OCIO lut workspace.

so to recap:

  • using ACEScg as native color space

  • using an OCIO asset for the viewport

  • using a PPV to remove tonecurve and gamut limit for correct camera view color

  • using a color node in MRQ to disable tonecurve for exr render

  • Compared result in Resolve (also setup as native ACEScg) (slight gamma perceptional difference, still working on that, but values seem consistent)

  • Compared in DJV using the same ACEScg OCIO view settings
