5.3 crashing. Unhandled Exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION reading address 0xffffffffffffffff

Unreal 5.3.1 keeps crashing. I’m unable to reliably reproduce it with a specific action, but it crashes at minimum 30 seconds after loading my level, at most 5 minutes after. Actions that have triggered it include moving around (in both play and edit modes) painting foliage, painting landscape textures, and placing blueprints onto the landscape.

I started getting the

I’ve tried restarting my pc, updating graphics drivers, uninstalling all 3rd party plugins, migrating the level to a new project, deleting saved and intermediate folders, fully re-installing the engine, deleting all landscape tiles that weren’t absolutely necessary, fixing all redirectors, validating all assets, and some random regedit tips I found. Thus far, nothing has changed.
I’ve only used blueprints, and written no lines of c++ for this project.

Same here, no idea where this crash is coming from. Started after a clean install of 5.3.1 in my machine. Any update let us know.

After a lot of trial and error I was able to fix the issue. Not sure what it was specifically but disabling Lumen and removing all Fog components from the map fixed the crash.

THE FOG!!

Thank you so much! I left lumen, but deleted the fog and the crashing has gone away.

When I was tracing through the source, it looks like the memory access that was causing the crash isn’t included in a release build, so hopefully I’ll be able to add the fog back right before I build.

Has anyone had any luck in pinpointing this?
I removed the fog and lumen is not active but my project keeps crashing on start up.

I tried a couple of different proposed solutions but none have worked so far:

  • Updated Nvidia drivers
  • Verified Unreal (5.3.2)
  • Removed Fog / Made sure Lumen is not active
  • Reset Nvidia settings to default in the control panel

The next thing will be to set it up on my laptop, provided it can even manage the engine to see if it crashes there as well or if it is anything related to my hardware and some of the new logic. Old versions of the project do work still it seems to have happend in tandem with Structure Change results in Unknown structure error on build

Hi all,

Quick update from my side, i managed to fix this it had nothing to do with NVIDIA or Fog or anything like that in my case as far as i can gather.

I copied an existing structure to reuse for another use case and this seems to have broken the referencing structures and/or data tables.

What i did was empty the structure again recopiling everything, that worked and then i readded the rows back in one by one and now it seems to work fine i can cook again without error.

Not from another project but the same and i mean the structure class in the blueprint version of the engine.

just copying this for example and referencing the copy along the original with a slightly altered name in a third structure broke it for some reason.
