4.9 Mac Viewport Quality

Hello,

I tested promoted branch 2 weeks ago and 4.9 branch today.
Editor /Game viewport quality is very low now. The textures and materials are low quality even on epic mode. At the bottom and on the right side of the screen are some artifacts - buggy noise (see screenshot).

In other viewports like persona or blueprint is everything ok - the textures are sharp and there are no artifacts.
Texture quality drops only on starting “play” - it is ok in editor preview.

I am using mac osx 10.11 El Capitan. 4.8 runs only on 10.10 and did not have this quality drop.
Graphiccard: AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB

Hey Footman,

We recently released the 4.9 preview 1 binary engine version and ask that you test this issue on this build to see if it still occurs. If you are able to reproduce the issue in an new blank project, please let us know and we can continue with our investigation.

Thanks,

Hello Andrew,

Updated and recompiled - nothing changed. After start to “play” texture quality drops hard (everything looks ok before).

Editor preview still got some artifacts and one more thing about editor viewport. I get sometimes this shadows when moving camera. It does not disappear but changing size and moving like water when getting closer with camera. So viewport is really broken.

Hello,

Yes the material quality is set to high. I did not have this issues on 4.8 with mac 10.10 (I am on 10.11 now).

Like I said the material / texture quality is good (editor, persona, blueprint preview) until the game play starts. So it can not be the graphic card.

The artifacts like on second screenshot come only in editor viewport.
Graphic drivers on mac are always the latest.

I think these are two different bugs: material quality drop and artifacts.

So there are two possible reasons for this issue:

  • Changes in 4.9
  • UE is not compatible with new mac 10.11 yet (I can not test 4.8 here)

Hey Footman,

Would you mind checking to make sure the ‘Material Quality Level’ is set to ‘High’. Also, the graphics card you are using is going to have trouble rendering on Epic settings, as it is not a high end gpu.

If you would like a comparison of all the graphics cards and where yours stands, relative on the list of performance, there is a link below. Artifacts are sometimes an indication of graphics processor issues.

Let me know what you discover and we can continue to troubleshoot this issue.

Thank you,

Hey Footman,

Currently El Capitan (10.11) is unsupported. We’re using OS X 10.11 El Capitan internally and we’re working closely with Apple on support for it (including the new renderer). However, the currently released beta version of 10.11 is evolving too rapidly and there are too many things left to do on both Apple and Epic sides that we cannot simply add official support to 4.9 (or 4.8) at this point.

As the new OS X matures and is closer to release (which we expect to be in late October) we will most likely start officially supporting 10.11 in UE 4.10 and release patches/QFEs for older UE4 versions.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue, and if you have any further questions please let me know.

Regards,

I dont really know what it should have to do with osx 10.11 if the quality drops only on “play” start. It proves that it has nothing to do with graphic output. Anyway I will try to bring 4.8 to run on new system to check this.

Hello,

I am on windows 7 on same machine now and having the same issue with preview 4. Realtime Editor preview is great but the quality drops very hard on game start. So it is harware issue with unreal. I did not have this earlier.

Hey Footman,

Are you running Parallels on your Mac to get Windows 7?

I ask because you said same machine, which means this could just be related to the graphics card and not tied to the OS.

In order to write a bug report for this issue, could you please provide me with screenshots when in the Viewport versus while playing?

Since I am not able to reproduce this issue on my end, I need as much concrete evidence as possible so the developers can assess the issues and attempt to find a resolution.

Thank you,
