I’m a 3d-artist and gamedesigner working for a small indiestudio in germany who’s working on a new gameprototype in his sparetime.
It’s a just for fun project to ‘get in touch’ with the UnrealEngine4 and to improve my skills regarding realtime graphics in terms of lighting, quality, performance but also gameplay/gamedesign.
I don’t want to talk too much about the gameplay/game mechanics but it’s a mixture between ‘Alone in the Dark (1992)’ and ‘Outlast (2013)’ but with more puzzle solving (Adventure-Horror-ExitGame).
Of course it’s nothing new in terms of gameplay but I have some ideas that could make this a solid prototype. The main features (inventory, basic test puzzles, and so on) are up and running so I decided to do the first graphic tests and scene setups.
The whole game is set in the late 50s and I wanted to do it completely black and white. I always loved the mood of the old black/white horror movies (Hitchcock/ Hammer Films) so I decided to recreate this mood. For modeling I used 3dsmax. All assets were created by myself.
it looks like it lives with the usage of font though (right now). i really hope it is not destroying the seriousness of your game. right now it looks like a caricature of itself.
i know that this could be a theme and an appreciated one, i simply have a hard time being impressed if something is not straight forward, but is trying to be … funny? ironic? u know what i mean.
Yes the font and the title are just a ‘dummy’ at the moment although it’s not considered to be a caricature or a B-Movie. If you take a look at the old, serious and high-budget horror production movies of the 40s-60s you will come up with exactly this stlye/type of font.
i believe the implications of those fonts have changed a lot though. at least my impression was what i pointed out earlier.
id really like to see a modern take on the font; it could make this a stunner!
Spent some time designing the ‘neighborhood’ to create ‘more atmosphere’ for the start scene/area. Furthermore I optimized the meshes/shaders to get 60fps/1080p on a GTX960M.
The realism in the assets are truly amazing. I love the quality of the rooms and the details that you have in the inventory assets. Keep up the great work!
This is pretty spot on! I could look to those assets in game for minutes. The overall noir visual is really great too. I agree with duffte about the font usage though. That seems tricky, because I think it can work, depending on the story you have.
Keep up the great work, can’t wait to see more of this!
