ue release 4.11.1, material masked, s7 edge + gear vr,crashed.

I tested many times to find out where cause the crash. then found out it’s masked material.

https://forums.unrealengine.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=89691&d=1461207862

Just Simple masked materials can cause crash. for example, a const scalar link to opacity mask can make this . and if I turn off vr mainfest or disable masked materials ,it won’t crash. ES2 Preview looks all good.

Forget to post S7 edge info

Interestingly my S7 Edge does not crash with this material.

My device is a Exynos: SM-G935F, 6.0.1, Oculus System Activities version: 1.0.2.4
So it looks like it’s a snapdragon only problem!

It is noticed by these users with my released app on the Oculus store :frowning:

I tried a non-GearVR project with masked material above on a SM-G935A and it worked fine. I haven’t been able to try GearVR; the install of the Gear VR services keeps failing.

Hi Chris thanks for looking into it,

It only occurs on the GearVR.

If you have trouble updating your gearvr (it doesn’t run at all?!?) then you probably need to enable the pre-installed facebook service on your device. Commonly known issue with the solution here:

  • go into app manager
  • show all (systems) apps
  • show disabled
  • reactivate facebook apps
  • option: reactivate samsung VR apps if they were disabled also (not my
    case)
  • go to oculus (and than to “oculus home”)
  • delete data and cache (don’t need to ununstall)
  • start oculus app - enter your account ID (was deleted with data
    cleanup)
  • start update - now it shall work!

I just read this https://www.reddit.com/r/GearVR/comments/4i4f2n/an_honest_apology_from_the_developer_of_annie/ and I am also interested in seeing this issue fixed or relayed to Samsung/Qualcomm and getting them to fix their drivers (most likely related to Snapdragon SoC only).

Thanks

Unfortunately that doesn’t work for me on the edge. I don’t even have the Oculus app. It tries to download 128.6MB (Gear VR Service, Gear VR System, Gear VR Video, Gear VR Gallery, App Manager, Oculus, Oculus Home), gets to the end and says “Install error” with just an option to install again which does the same all over :frowning:

I also don’t see any apk’s downloaded to the sdcard to try grabbing and manually installing as suggested on one of the S6 install failure topics.

Strange… Do you have access to a non Edge S7 with gear vr software installed? Not 100% sure, but I think it maybe reproducible on a normal S7 with snapdragon

I just tried a SM-G930V (Snapdragon) with the same failure to install. I’ll see if I can find another one.

Maybe you need to update OS?

I recall phone has to be online first time you put in in Gear VR (whether it has to be 4G or if WiFi is enough, I don’t know)

On my Exynos, I ran into similar issues because I disabled Facebook stuff (which I don’t use, nor want to use). If you go to the Application Manager, switch to System Applications (on the “More” Menu) and scroll down to com.facebook.appmanager/com.facebook.system - are any of those disabled?
They need to be on for GearVR to work properly. There is a 3rd app called Facebook, which can be safely disabled.

Thanks for reply. This give me a clue to find the reason. The Chinese edition S7 os maybe not update now, beacause I update nothing…

Hi liumingod,

I got an S7 SM-G930V (Snapdragon) retail phone to try your masked texture test on. I added a cube to the scene with your material (unlit, masked, red, opacity at zero). It works fine for me. Here are the versions of the services I’m running:

Gear VR System 1.0.10
Oculus Home 1.16.3
Oculus System Activities 1.0.2.5-28872257

I tested this with 4.11.2.

Can you provide the build number from Settings → Device information → Build Version?

Hopefully liumingod can answer soon but maybe it really is a S7 Edge problem only - did you manage to get your S7 Edge working yet?

OK, I think maybe is a S7 edge snapdragon problem.
My Versions
Gear VR System 1.0.10 Oculus Home 1.14.1 Oculus System Activities 1.0.2.4-26822117

Oculus Home 1.14.1

that seems like an older version - what if you remove it and reinstall do you get a newer version? does the newer version fix the problem?

I need the actual build number, that determines the GPU driver installed. This is in Settings.

Build number : MMB29M.G9350ZCU2APD1
Is this?
