Lorenzo, known as the Magnificent, was the unofficial head of state in Florence from 1469 to 1492. After surviving an attack in 1478 at Florence Cathedral by conspirators (who assassinated his brother Giuliano), supporters commissioned life-size wax images of Lorenzo in churches in thanksgiving for his survival. Verrocchio reportedly supervised the wax specialist Orsino Benintendi in making those sculptures.
This portrait, thought probably made later, may be based on the wax sculpture that was dressed in the clothes Lorenzo wore during the attack. He appeared in that attire at his window later that day to show the crowd he had survived.
