I don’t think using a mesh is what he is after. Typically volume rendering is used for things like CT scans because things like the fibrous thin tissue is very hard to resolve into a discrete solid surface. And clouds are not well represented by meshes. And he mentioned this is for thesis research so I don’t think just seeing a sliced mesh will further that goal.
