Hey Guys! I need some terrains for my game that I’m building for PC and Mac. I just want to make sure of the tools that my team uses are the best. So, can you guys please tell me what are the main differences between UE4’s landscape tool and World Machine.
World Machine is a terrain generator -> so you can easily create realistic terrains in a “short” time I personally would recommend you to use a combination -> e.g create the rough landscape in the UE4 - export it to world machine - overwork it (e.g erosion) - import it again
I think in this video epic games is talking about world machine + the landscape tool: &list=UUBobmJyzsJ6Ll7UbfhI4iwQ
World Machine generates a heightmap- a greyscale image used to influence the position of verts in the landscape. When you create a landscape actor in UE4, it creates one with no information in it. Applying the heightmap from WM (or anything really, PS, MSPaint, Gimp, etc.) moves the relative verts up or down. There is nothing special about the 2D image that WM creates from one you’d make in any other editing software.
The only optimization you can do is when setting the component/resolution size of your landscape at creation and the LOD settings under the details panel after you create the landscape.
My suggestion is that you download the trial version of WM, see how you like using it and then decide.
World Machine also creates beautiful textures and normal maps that go with those heightmaps, which is what makes it special. I think World Machine will typically produce more realistic results than you will be able to create by hand and much more quickly. If you are creating a photorealistic type game (not cartoony) and you have large outdoor environments, World Machine will probably blow your mind.
There is also something called terresculptor which atm is free for use given its alpha nature, but I"ve used it and it seems just fine. WM is obviously very nice but you are limited in resolution in trial. I recommend starting with Terresculptor and if it suits your purposes, stick with it until its no longer free ( not sure what price will be if any , haven’t checked) and consider your options then. WM isn’t hard to learn so you can switch anytime of course, if you’re not happy with TerraS. Im using TerraS atm and find it more than sufficient.

Thank You everyone for all the information. I’ve decided that I’ll go with the world machine to create my landscapes and then fill it with vegetation and other props inside UE4.
This community is awesome. Really helped me a lot.
