While I completely respect the promise apps like WM offer artists, it helps none, that asking questions on the forum result in your post remaining in ‘limbo’ for hours and hours. I’ve seen consistently happen, and for days at a time.
I get people are ‘busy’ , but happens often, and I’m also noting that while WM is considered valuable given UE4’s use of it in demos , it remains clear they need to consider offering options to artists because WM isn’t taking its role seriously in the support dept.
It does me no good, to learn a given app, ive my post is stuck in perpetual limbo, because the author has decided to ‘moderate’ every post and then takes huge stretches of time to even get the approved. Maybe he’s isn’t connected as the rest of us are, odd given the app he’s presenting for the community
I obviously need to find something else, but hunting and pecking , hoping to find something isn’t going to be efficient.
Short of wm which is no longer a option, what other landscape creation tool supports the features UE4 needs to bring in tiled terrains or even just single terrains ?
I’ll be searching myself but I thought I’d put out there in case anyone else has found options that are workable.
is not a whine, is a professional not wanting to be stopped in their tracks for support.
World machine is a totally separate program, so you will need to send an email to tech support on their site in order to find out more info. There are some here with WM experience, so you could try asking your question in the Content Creation forum topic and hopefully there is someone who can help you with it.
As far as other programs, I have just downloaded and tried out Terresculptor (it is in Alpha now, and free), it’s a sculpting program, so not exactly the same as world machine, but you might like it. Also there is Terragen which is very similar to WM, but I have not tried it before.
Maybe you should post your criticism of World Machine in their forum where its developer has a to read it and respond… I am not aware of any moderation of posts in the WM forums. Keep in mind that the tool is being developed by a single person who certainly has to divide his time between several tasks and can’t answer all questions right away. It can take a day or two to get your question answered, but in the end I got an answer to all of my questions.
There are quite a few other terrain generators, like GeoControl, L3DT or Grome. And of course, the big names that are more targeting environment scene rendering, like Vue or Terragen, also have terrain generation functionality.
Personally, my favorite still is World Machine, because its erosion processes are second to none, and the support for large tiled landscapes really great.
I have done that already, posted on their forums about the 'moderation hastle. UE4 doesn’t even ‘moderate’, so its kinda silly and unjustly makes people wait much longer than they otherwise would.
Its not about ‘bad wm’, its about finding alternatives, because wm support is non existant atm given the silly moderation nonsense, that very few even do .
I was letting unreal devs know, that going with WM may not be such a great idea afterall.
Also, while terresculptor is nice, but Very alpha, because atm there is no support for tied worlds. A huge non starter for most of us, but a very nice app just the same, and its nice the guy offers it for free commercial , given its current state.
Terrains are one of the hardest things to get right, Just watch even some holywood block buster films attempts at Terrain and you be able to spot there not real and they get the to do all off line. Im affraid it’s a part of the market that is small so your never going to get the best interface or easy use. You can do what any other user of world machine has done, Pay for and learn the software or you can buy assets others have created for your needs like in thread for the market place.
As part of the asset pack you get tutorials that take you through the whole process from start to finish with using Blender 3D as your main Terrain editing tool including mixing different maps, Baking out textures, Baking out new modified Height maps after using the sculpting tools to get what you want.

To be honest it’s not for others just to do all the work for you, It’s like anything in life. You have to put the time and money in to get what you want or compromise and buy work and knowledge from others that have gone through that pain. Nothing in lifes for free.
UE4 imports bitmaps. That’s it. There is nothing special about them at all, they are simply images. If a program can produce an image, you can technically make a terrain that is compatible with UE4. You could literally draw out your terrain with a marker on a piece of paper, take a photo of it with your phone and import into UE4.
What WM can do is generate several large images that are tiled together. Because that makes more sense than an image that is 150,000 x 150,000.
It sounds like you are using the professional edition which is $250- why did you buy it without trying the trial version first?
Also dude, you are complaining that no one answered your post in a few hours and you figured it out yourself:
://forum.world-machine/index.php?topic=2723.0
You also could have searched for “Height” on the extensive user docs listed on the WM site, but you didn’t do that either.
I wasn’t asking for anything , for free, where did you get that idea I wonder…
There is nothing wrong in asking for help, when that help is not available, and ‘assuming’ we can just ALL run and jump and buy all the software out there in the market, I find strangely disturbing honestly. I do what I can, like you.
I figured out my , way ahead of my ‘post’ going public…sigh. Like I said, he really has no need to moderate every single post, unless he has some really lame anti-spam code. UE4 doesn’t ‘delay’ your posts, right ?
I know most all that you just said, why did you think I wasn’t aware of , is beyond me…I never said I didn’t understand, what the images are , but I guess, thx just the same for your, ahem…explanation.
The ‘tile’ thing, is the main reason I wanted to try out Wm, yes.
I am not using the pro version, atm.
I am not your DUDE, call me appropriately, or do NOT address me, at all!
Just because I answered my own question , after a day + in ‘moderated mode’, doesn’t mean anything, can’t imagine why you thought it did. The post just makes it LOOK like I just posted, but its been a day + ,I posted it last night…so stop assuming.
I fixed it,mostly…by using the numbers in File Input > elevation span.
I never found any ‘online’ docs I could magically search through, only a downloadable PDF, which I looked in, but never found what I did on my own. The pdf , when searching for ‘height’ never highlighted the field it needed to, which fixed my in short order, as noted above.
1: The actual question of OP has nothing to do with UE4. He is just frustrated because World Machine forums takes too long to respond.
2: @OP: We all are here to help one another but please be a little more polite. There’s no need to get angry just because another guy called you “dude”.
If you are looking for alternatives for World Machine, please go to General Discussion section and ask for it.
