Superb job!
For some reason the latest image reminds me of “Shadow Of The Beast” series from Amiga… Although they are not really similar Maybe the pose of the character and nice color scheme.

Thx guys.
I was sick for 5 days where very little work happened. After that i lost another few days due to having forgot to rename some bones on the rig. So i had to redo all my anim blueprints and those nice things.
Eventually after redoing a boat load of work i am approaching a stable climb system in the game.
Basics were implemented.
If you are not close enough to the wall you will jump and potentially grab onto ledges.
If you are close enough, you will do a wall run, which then checks if you can grab onto a ledge via feet or hands or knees depending what height you reach.
Most of the animations are not finished and serves as blockout to better visualize what the end result will look like.
There are still a few annoying issues that needs to be resolved, like a bug regarding launching away from the wall.
And the sad part is… tomorrow i am leaving for 6 days and wont be able to work on this then. Sucks when you make progress and then have to put it on hold.
On a side note. I also implemented correct foot placement but temporarily disabled it, and it should be more visible in the next update.
Cheers.
Great job. Love the theme and art work
Awesome! Keep it up! Congrats
Thx guys.
After the leave i had to take i spent the past 2 days reworking the ledge grabbing and climbing system.
Previously it was a pretty rushed job to get some results before leaving.
Its cleaned up and much more customize-able now with easy readability and the functionality to plug in additional “states”
Right now i have 5 states.
Grab
WallRun
Climbing from hanging position
Climbing from a knee position
Climbing from a Foot position
It will not perform a climb action unless the wall run is completed. But if you are still running up vertical, and the end is reached of that wall, it will do the Feet climbing Action. Basically stepping up onto the ledge.
If the character is losing momentum and it still has not reached the top, it checks if it is range to shove a knee onto the ledge and climb and if its too low for that, it will check if it can climb up by grabbing onto the ledge.
As far as i can tell the bugs have been eliminated in this system and its a lot smoother than the video previously posted.
I guess this was more a devblog post and an excuse to take a few minutes away from the game
The blueprint for the climbing system is pretty neat also.
Spent a lot of time resolving some more bugs with the climbing system. Haven’t found another bug so it seems its all good now and also implemented wall sliding.
Rest of the time was spent updating and improving the game design documentation. And then also i decided to quickly create 2 cliff faces that can be used in multiple ways.
In the screenshot there are 2 standalone ones. Then on their sides i scaled it down and duplicated it to see how it would perform if used to tile over a surface. And then also placed one of each in the ground to see the feasibility of using it for a quick ground detail.
I also converted these to tile-able displacement maps with normal maps and diffuse for use on terrains.
Rhino foundation is laid out.
Now i can start with the fun stuff… impaling enemies on the horn and watch them flop around while your trample others.
Poachers - went with a faceless character to make it more plausible of seeing the same person. Then i will just adjust shirt colors a little to create some variation. But you wont really see the colors any way.
Dude … the art is looking good … loving where you are going with this. 8-}
I am somewhat on the fence about exactly how i want the camera distance to be.
Any advise or criticism would be much appreciated.
Close Cam
Far Cam
Other than that the last week was spent learning behavior trees. It drove me up the wall but now that i understand it better it makes more sense using them.
The first enemy is done. He is a patrolling enemy that shoot you on sight or if he hears you.
Bullets kill on impact so its best to avoid giving away your position with these guys.
Personally I prefer far cam, but is it possible to do both? Allow a button to toggle the distance during gameplay.
Hehe i also prefer the far cam and the people i spoke to prefers close cam.
So i think the best would be to be able to zoom.
Thx for the feedback.
I made some “art” and posted it on twitter. Thought i would share it here as well.
That scene just makes me want to Brainpan those poachers … good job … love the art style … **** fine job at capturing the essence of the African Savanah. 8-}
Thx man. I finally finished my attack animations and blueprints… tomorrow i just need to crush out any remaining bugs.
I try to do some fun stuff in the evenings and was curios to see a blue pallet… though im not fully satisfied with it.
First shot was taken during gameplay and the second was just a posed scene
Really love the colors of the second picture.
Thx dude… i have a lot of contrasting color pallets lined up… cant wait to get to all that.
New dog base mesh. 1st one was terrible
Just a status update.
Last year April i left my dayjob and took all my savings to move careers to game development. Its what i wanted to do since i left high school which was in 2000. But as we all know life does not always allow you to pursue what you want and i did not get to focus on game development.
Last year i thought its time i try to follow my passion. Having never done game development i spent almost a year just learning how game development works, the pipelines, what is required… learned blueprints etc. Basically i only started game development last year April. The learning curve was steep.
I was hoping to have reached a point in development where i could apply for grants but found myself running out of my savings this year April. Not wanting to give up on the dream of being a game developer i started doing freelance jobs. I soon found myself in a situation where i am barely making enough to keep paying for my car and house. And also spending so much time on freelancing for minimal wage that it consumed all my time.
It was a big risk i took and i do not regret it. It was awesome learning how to make games. But at the moment its no longer sustainable and im moving back to a career where i can afford to live. I had an unrealistic deadline set 1 month ago where i would release the ledge climbing system for free in hopes of garnering interest in me for freelance jobs. And it worked but being a new comer i have been charging as little as $10 an hour which is not sustainable.
That being said development on this project has slowed down to a crawl. Going back to a career that has nothing to do with game dev i will have to squeeze in hours where i can to progress on this.
I must admit having been a full time game dev was awesome. But working on a project that requires lots of art, having to design everything in terms of logic (blueprints) and well doing everything solo is hard work and almost an impossible feat. Well impossible if you have never done game dev and needed a full year just to learn how to do it.
The way i see it is that the investment was more of a self taught learning school for game dev that it was being an indie dev. If i had another year to spend working full time on game dev… then man i could have pulled this off.
With that being said… i will post progress on the actual game here as soon as i have gotten my affairs in order and gotten back in the 8 - 5 routine.
Cheers for now.
DUDE!!! Did you get greenlit yet? PLease give us an update man!! What’s happening? How are things going?
Hey dude.
Yeah got greenlit a few months ago. 16 December to be exact but the store page is not listed at the moment. Need to get a little more material to show before making the store page live on steam.
Development on the project has been somewhat standstill for a while now due to all the freelance jobs i have been doing to stay afloat.
But i am returning to a day job this week and will then be able to hire some people to help with the project.
Its a ton of work doing everything… though i don’t mind.
Definitely going to hire a sound engineer.
