Another dead island in my steam account :o
We are using fully dynamic lighting in Dead Island 2
Hehe…actually there will be random PVP-Events as well to bring some competitive elements to the game
I honestly do not know a lot about how the FX guys are making these What I do know however, is that all the stuff you see when Zombies get hit is pretty standard fx stuff (so no ubercustom magic involved ^^). Lot of the effects use distortion to get some variation in how the blood “moves” while in the air. I am not 100% sure, but I think that flip books are mostly just used for smoke and fire, but not for blood. However…I could be wrong with that.
The dismemberment uses attachment points on the meshes where “wound” meshes get spawned when you slice off the arm etc. Lots of masking and mix and match of different meshes involved ^^
Thanks for the questions and the positive ressonance so far, glad you guys like it!
Have a good time and cheers!
It’d be to get teams using the Engine on a Twitch stream or a sit down at an Expo…I’d imagine plenty to be learned Cause this looks …I look forward to more updates…
Graphics …
Great thread!
I wonder do you use Blueprints for productive game features, or is everything always done in C++?
We use quite a lot of blueprint systems, but you have to be careful since its not for free and ticks add up quite fast But you can do some really neat things with it. Also, we prototyped a lot of systems with Blueprints first, but they got natified eventually^^ In the end, it just comes down to what makes the most sense in any given case.
Are you use your own technology for dynamic lighting or? Also a graphic part of game looks really impressive!
Nope, its all out of the box Unreal 4 Lighting with a couple of modifications to the code to just tell the Engine to do things in a way we want it to^^ But no custom implementation or something like that in there
Cheers!
Hey guys,
small update! is an article from our Technical Director André for “Making Games” about some of the systems we use and developed to build Dead Island 2. It has lots of interesting information as well as a couple of screenshots in it.

Enjoy!
Thanks a lot for the article! It is a good resource to throw at people getting into open world game dev.
Good choice of using UE4. Most impressive UE4 game so far. Good work !
Nice job.
Something like that “AssetGroups” need to be added in the UE4 public to work with prefabs.
Hey guys,
I am actually quite late with this, but some of you might have already heard that YAGER is not working on Dead Island 2 anymore!
So yeah…quite a sad announcement but this thread will receive no further updates!
Thanks a lot for all the kind words and interest so far Have a good time and keep the good stuff coming!
Cheers,
