Winter #ue4jam: February 8-11th - THEME: ON THIN ICE

Does the SideFX website load correctly for anyone? I remember having this problem during the last jam where none of the images/videos on the site are loading. I thought maybe they are being hugged to death by the UE4 forums, but it looks like that isn’t the case.

Is there gonna be a key note or something that signals the start of the jam? If so, link please?

The link to Houdini license says it’s not accepting anymore submissions, please advise

i cant download the form :frowning:
Is there any other link ?

They were offering licenses leading up to the start of the jam.

You mean the submission form? It’s a Google form that you fill out online. Is it not opening?

So it looks like the link to Houdini trial form is gone from this thread, and yes- previously there was an issue with it. The form was closed/not accepting any more sign-ups. Is it safe to assume that is no longer an offering?

Submitted the entry but will post here for anyone interested. If this is not the right place to make this post, please move to the appropriate place.

NONE! All made for the jam within the jam time limit!

Trailer:

I’ll be doing some streaming of the whole process if anyone is interested. Twitch

I’ll also be posting updates on my twitter I rarely use as well lol. https://twitter.com/beheadedstraw

I have a possibly stupid question but this will be my first game jam so please forgive me if it is. When I make my models in blender I apply basic colors to them before I import them in, and the engine recognizes them and applies basic color to the models. Is this considered “Default Material” or does that literally mean the basic material grey most things spawn in? Thank you in advance.

The basic, default material applied to anything, in general, in the engine. Some things have other materials applied by “default”, but what is being referred to as “default material” is specifically named DefaultMaterial, located in /Engine/EngineMaterials. I would gather that using other core engine default/developer materials is frowned upon (or lazy, or whatever you want to call it), but the rules seem to just target DefaultMaterial

Not going to finish in time - Every time it tries to save the project it singles out 2 or 3 items to refuse - and they have to be rebuilt and all of their references manually replaced to continue.
Hopefully the next update will fix this issue.

Seems like a lot of peeps are going to use this thread for support questions… Anyhow, your link just goes to YouTube. The main site. Not a video.

[edit]
Don’t reply here on that. Move over to a support forum. Let’s try and keep this clean, as far questions related specifically to the Jam? Not technical aspects of the engine in general.
[/edit]

I didn’t ask any questions. I just commented that I won’t be finishing my entry for the Game Jam this time and why.

Thank you for pointing out the bad link.

Here is my game, 9IcyLevels, and this time I slept well and ate a lot.

Walkthrough video:

A game, made in two days by me and one of my friends. Player takes control of a small IceCube, but not in the traditional WSAD way. WSADQE - each key adds impulse to one of 6 cube faces. Each hit or rotation adds dificulty to the gameplay, because you need to figure out which key you have to press.

All levels are constructed by a simple level building tool I made in Houdini, so huge kudos to @The_BenMears](https://twitter.com/The_BenMears), this time used that 3 month license!

Check out our game “Do Cats Dream of Electric Tin Bulb-Bots?”. It made sense at the time and is definitely entirely about thin ice. And cats.

Grab a rock and break the ice to knock your opponent into the water in this 2 player game.
Player 1 keyboard, Player 2 controller.
Sounds are from freesound.org and ampermusic.com, all other assets were created for this game jam.
I would’ve liked to have created more levels, but think it was my best game yet!

For this year’s UE4 Winter jam, I decided to explore a few cool concepts using breakable meshes along with physics animations. The theme was “On Thin Ice” and the resulting game ended up being a lot of fun to play, specially when a few of the elements worked together better than expected.

I used a few assets from the marketplace, such as the POLYGON Vikings pack for some of the ice and mountain meshes, and I modeled and rigged all characters. The Killer Whale was a lot of fun to model, rig and animate.

My favorite thing about Seal Downhill is the whale’s behavior. The Orcas are there to ruin your run, and they will try to push you down to the bottom of the ocean - however, sometimes they end up helping you by throwing you high in the sky and out of the water, sometimes letting you reach a platform that you didn’t expect reaching.

In BLINK you throw a ball that you can teleport to. You stand on platforms that shatter if you stand there for too long and you need to get to the next platform or checkpoint before it shatters.

This is my first ever game jam, we entered this game jam a day late and the crunch was real. I am really happy with the way this turned out though, the QUBE inspired aesthetics, the level design inspired by the bunnyhopping linear obstacle course levels from Counter-Strike and the fact that it’s only 84mb is something I never thought we would achieve.

The game did go through some drastic changes in the prototyping phase and the “on thin ice” theme ended up not being so literal in the end but I think the game still gives you a feeling of being on thin ice all the time. It’s just not winter themed.
