There is an interesting article about UWP current state and how it affects Gears Of War so badly, read it here: Eurogamer.net
I personally WONT! support that platform in any of my projects after reading what Sweeney said about it.
Give M$ an inch and they will take the mile. Then it could be xbox live account for the pc just to play on-line?
Got your back
Yeah, the whole “but Unity does it” is such an awfully poor argument. So Unity fell into a trap with eyes wide closed, likely following a bag of money from Microsoft. Why does that mean Epic should do the same? I applaud them for valuing customer rights enough to speak out against UWP, rather than integrate it which would only worsen the situation. If developers don’t use UWP, no one will. And that’s the way it should be.
I’m not sure if people care about Windows itself or phones or tablets but if UWP means people can get their projects running on their own Xbox One without any extra payments and such there will be demand for it. Also if Xbox One will have a shop section for UWP games that people can submit the same way could in the past to the regular windows market with the simple guidelines it will probably mean a small gold rush just like some “new” platforms/markets have been.
No, I want support. And supports only UWP. As you know it’s first AR headset in the market. If Magic Leap don’t deliver theirs anytime soon, Microsoft will be the king of the new market, the new era. So, no matter we like it or not, we can’t just ignore UWP. If we do, we just fetter ourselves and give others opportunity to succeed.
Oh, I’M DEFINITELY GOING TO IGNORE IT. Count on it!
I don’t think Amazon reviews are a good way to gauge operating system success.
Well the problem here is that Linux/Ubuntu is not found on the average gamer’s laptop or desktop. I like Ubuntu and have used it on a very dear laptop of me for some time but in the end I found UE4 too unstable on it and made the switch to Win 10(I have used that on my desktop without any issues for some time now.).
I do not see Ubuntu as the number one option for developing games on or playing games on so far. Yes it has improved over the years and yes it offers A LOT of awesome features for the person who is good with terminal commands, a CS student and the web developer who dabbles in Open source tech such as WordPress etc.
However for UE4 game technology I would say that Ubuntu still needs to get more stable before it becomes a valid development platform.
As a customer platform I would need to see much more machines with Ubuntu installed first. Ubuntu does not appeal to the average PC user or gamer yet. Yes their is some engines such as Unity and Leadwerks that offer Unix support to some extend but it does not change the very fact that the majority of all machines uses Windows OS.
Yes UWP seems to be a way to get a walled-garden like the Android or IOS Operating systems. Yes Microsoft would like to earn money like Apple and Google. Can Ubuntu replace Windows right now? Not a chance for now. I have used Ubuntu 14.04 for some time and I really like it but I feel myself forced to move to/stay with Windows 10 as Ubuntu is not stable enough yet to be a reliable developer platform with UE4.
I hope one day to see Ubuntu as the OS I develop on, ship with and rely on. Until that is the case I stick with Mister 90+ procent OS, which is Windows.
Perhaps we should also remember that Windows offer free use of Visual Studio Community(it is actually the Professional version) until a certain income is reached, free upgrades(within one year) to Win 10 for all who have a win 7 or win 8 installed(counts for retail and OEM as well). That means Microsoft needs to build a new revenue platform. Here Microsoft has without doubt looked at and learned from Apple and Google as well. Even Ubuntu has a software center where some software is free and some can be bought.
- Do I prefer Windows 10 to be like Apple with the Apple store? Nope.
- Can we switch to Ubuntu right now? Nope.
- Does the majority of the PCs all over the world use Ubuntu? Nope.
- Does the majority of gamers use Unbuntu? Nope.
- Does the majority of gamers use Windows in one way or another? YES.
- Does the majority of PC sold comes with a pre-installed Windows OS? YES.
- Do I believe that "They want to control every single application that is “allowed” to run on a user’s machine. "? Nope.
- Do I believe that “Microsoft will try to completely wall off the gaming market, the last thing keeping it alive. It will feast on it like a vampiric leech until its killed PC gaming as well.”? No. Microsoft needs people to develop on their platforms. Windows is not free after the summer is over
I keep develop on and use Windows until 5 and 6 turns into a no and 4 turns into a yes…
Well it’s not like you need to make your game on Ubuntu, and that’s where you can help making Linux a viable platform. When your game is done and you’ve got versions being released, just get a dual boot or a virtual machine, build your game for Linux and release it as well. Nobody is being asked to stop using Windows for ever and convert to the holy church of Linux. That’s not the point.
The point is, Linux gamers (there are some of them) are usually
- considered second-class citizens as far as gaming goes ;
- fed ******** about how that game they love will be ported to Linux some time down the road (aka never, see : Rome 2 TW) ;
- unhappy with using Windows to play that game in the meantime ;
- very happy with games that ship for Linux in a decent way.
We’ve got UE4 & Unity, Steam & GOG, we can use the same exact tools to ship for Windows, Mac, Linux. That’s just what we need to do as developers. It’s not much.
