Why should we delete components with little images?

I read this sentence again and again from the developers:

“Delete components with almost no images aligned, then run the alignment again”

For example here: https://support.capturingreality.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001485012-How-to-put-together-more-components-

Why should we delete these components?
Should we not rather try to connect them to other components using Control Points?

I think the developers don’t make it clear what exactely deleting the components will actually do and how it will actually help.

At least I don’t understand the use of it.

When I delete a component, I always think I’m discarding images.

If anybody understands what they mean, please tell me.

Hi.

If you want you can remain them in your project.

Just remember that “second” Aligns use existing selected component as a base. Unregistered images or images from other components (unregistered in selected component too) will be try to align to already registered images.

  1. What do you mean by “selected components”?

  2. Does the third alignment use the components of alignment #1 and alignment #2?

Hi Alice,

  1. I think he means that RC will try to align images, that are not part of any component yet, with the currently active component. That is quite an importand information and I did not come across it yet. So thanks for asking that!

  2. Also a very good question that I would like to know the answer as well! My guess is that RC treats all components equally.

In addition to you initial question: Keeping the small ones, RC will probably be biased for finding an alignment and will also, if I am correct in answer 1, consider images, that are already part of a component, with a lower priority than “orphans”.

Sorry guys. Out of PC.

When you select any component. Other images that not in component treat as unregistered.
That’s all.
So you select desired component. And run align again (just align or after CP adjustment).
And RC will try align unregistered images with already registered in selected component.
Sometime this is enough to align all images.
Other components is just a “garbage” for us.

What exactely do you mean by “select”?

Click on it so that it’s orange?

Thanks Vlad. What do you mean by “us” though. I remember your old signature saying you are not related. Has that changed?

“Us” I mean all we usually need one component with perfectly aligned all images.
All other components just temporary data and can be deleted.

Regarding signature - don’t know. Can this count or not that I one of ReaityCapture experts. And more I working with RC more I understand that no other tools can’t make work better than RC.

Don’t get me wrong, I know you know your stuff!

It’s just that sometimes it’s good to know that there’s inside knowledge, so one can be absolutely certain.

I myself have “guessed” many times, sometimes wrong, sometimes right.

No problem.
I’m in tight contact with RC and making many own researches in this area as photogrammetry expert in one of the best 3D scanning studio in Tokyo. And I try answer in areas I know really well, or ask developers first about my own thoughts.

I suspected something like that…

Thanks for elaborating a bit!

It would be kind of helpful if such conversations would take place over the forum. For one thing some people who are interested in learning the deeper mechanisms could learn something and also the DEVs would show a bit more precense…
