Games make up a huge part of the internet, bring in billions of money for the involved industries and artists, but somehow the AAA content manages to stay relatively rare for developers, unless you are a studio and create everything on your own.
For example look at deviantart fantasy icons, literally everything http://www.deviantart.com/art/web-game-icons-155146300 but very few if any for purchase.
There are some options for icons and good quality at the Unreal and Unity stores, and sales seem to do okay. But many artists or rights holders, still seem unaware of tapping into this fast evolving market. Envanto has a similar site called graphicsriver, but the quality to pricing ratio over there is for the most part lacking.
The situation for quality 3D models in general is very similar - with Unreal rigged options far behind. Some artists begun to release for Unreal, but they often choose simple models, or no rigging at all. On top, many charge extra for less, when compared to Unity store pricing and options. There are also problems with simple nudity restrictions (no boobs, no genitals) for the Unreal market, preventing at least some quality entries, according to some accounts.
However, with years of game development on various platforms, there shouldn’t in theory be a bottleneck for quality 2D graphics or 3D models. Content from older titles could simply be reintroduced, companies can tap into the current market opportunities, rights holders seem to miss this chance. But not everyone, for instance recently the rights holder for Wasteland 2 models begun to release their content for reuse. inXileModels 3D Models for Download | TurboSquid
Is introduction of older content from past titles an evolving trend?
Will more artists begin releasing content for the Unreal marketplace?
Likely, and there seems to be a potential for middleman services too, who help transition content (rigging, announcements, preparation) - a big void as it seems.
