I create a new level using the main menu File → New Level and select the Basic World option. When my viewport opens up, this is what I see:
Note that there are no conrols within the viewport for Lit vs Unlit, etc! Also, if I create a brand new project, (Game - FPS template) it also comes up black with no controls within the viewport.
Thanks 3dRaven. I also found a slightly different “fix” for this (though your fix sounds a heck of alot better). I docked the content browser and noticed a little corruption in the upper left corner where the word “Viewport” was being partiall overwritten by “Content Bowser” and then dragged the content browser window to the right a bit so it docked to a different section of the editor screen. Then the viewport became visible as expected.
Note for others: These solutions seem to be the ONLY way to fix this. I also saw the exact same thing when I used a different Unreal engine entirely and made a brand ne project. Furthermore, I went as far as to uninstall Epic completely from my system, reinstalled a clean version and the problem still remained on a brend new project.
So the editor is storing configuration information in it’s own special area outside of the main install locations!
